How to Draw/Paint Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) in Dry Brush Technique.
Link- http://merrillk.com/?part=fineart&articles_id=13277&act=artist1&artist=69&collection=462 This video is going to teach you how to draw or paint two famous pirates, Captain Jack Sparrow and Mr. William Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean. I dont care if you if you have limited art experience, grab your art supplies because you are going to surprise yourself today. In this video, I am going to demonstrate the process of dry brush, but you also have the option to follow along with a pencil. I strongly recommend that you hit the link in the video description and use my step by step guide while you watch this video. Its printable and it has photos and text and it will simplify the process a lot.

If you are planning on doing dry brush, do the steps on watercolor paper.

If you are planning on doing a pencil drawing, do the steps on drawing paper.
Lets begin. Captain Jack Sparrow is a fictional character and the main protagonist in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series created by screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, portrayed by Johnny Depp. He is first introduced in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). He appears in the sequels Dead Man's Chest (2006), At World's End (2007), and On Stranger Tides (2011). Jack Sparrow was conceived by Elliott and Rossio initially as a supporting character, but Jack serves as a central protagonist in the films. He was brought to life by the actor Johnny Depp, who based his characterization on The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and cartoon character Pepé Le Pew.

The series Pirates of the Caribbean was inspired by a Disney theme park ride, and in 2006, when the ride was revamped, the character of Jack Sparrow was introduced to it. Jack Sparrow is also the subject of a children's book series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Jack Sparrow, which chronicles his teenage years and the character has also appeared in numerous video games.

In the context of the films, Sparrow is one of the Brethren Court, the Pirate Lords of the Seven Seas. He can be treacherous, but survives mostly by using wit and negotiation rather than weapons or force, preferring to flee most dangerous situations and fight only when necessary. Sparrow is introduced seeking to regain his ship, the Black Pearl, from his mutinous first mate, Hector Barbossa, and attempts to escape his blood debt to the legendary Davy Jones while battling the East India Trading Company.

And I promise that I am going to make this VERY EASY for you. What? You dont believe me? Well fine! I guess that you are one of those people that need proof. Click the Little Old Man on the screen to go to a playlist of peoples drawings made from my videos. Oh, so you're back.....And you believe me now. Good! Now you can grab a pencil and some drawing paper. You are about to draw Chris Paul. But first, a quick word from our channel mascot......

Step 1: Draw the shape that you see. Take some extra time to compare the height versus the width.
Step 2: Add the two ovals. Notice their overall size compared to the shape from step 1.
Step 3: Add the nose shape. Notice that it is triangular and the line on the bottom resembles a bird in flight.
Step 4: This step is small, but tricky. It is the upper lip and the moustache. Notice how close the moustache is to the nose and draw both shapes.
Step 5: I just added two shapes, but for now ignore the line in the middle and see the two shapes as one larger shape. The larger shape resembles an ear of corn. After you add the large shape, add the squiggly line in the middle. This line has 8 points pointing downwards.
Step 6: Now add the bottom lip and the soul patch below it. Notice the size difference compared to the top lip.
Step 7: Add the U shape for the bottom of the face.
Step 8: Add the ears and the hair. A tip for the ears is to notice their placement compared to other features of the face.
Step 9: Add the eyebrows. CP3 isnt quite Drake, but his eyebrows are thick.
Step 10: Add the two rainbow shapes under the eyebrows.
Step 11: This is the hardest step. A trick to make it easier is to observe that there is one eye length between each eye. Overall the shape of the eye is almond like and the top of the iris is blocked by the upper eye lid.
Step 12: Add the lines that you see in the ears.

Want to learn to draw Bruce Lee? Look no further. This video will teach you how to draw his body step by step. The first minute and a half is a Bob Ross stop motion karate movie parody where Bob Ross enters my studio and unleashes his master painter ninja style....aka- beats me up.
Art, Step by Step Drawing tutorial:

Step 1.) Observe then add the shape for the upper chest. This shape is comparable to the height of the face. Please note that Bruce's body is turned so the area is foreshortened.
Step 2.) fits to step one like a puzzle piece. Be sure to notice that the bottom is rainbow like and the sides point slightly away from each other.
Step 3.) is a very tricky step. Try to notice that the shape of the arm in this step looks like a women's dress shoe. Put that large shape in first, then go on to she smaller shapes.
Step 4.) Add the V Shape for Bruce Lee's left arm. Notice that it is wider at the top of the arm than the bottom. The palm of the hand is circular and the thumb and pinky protrude at a similar angle.
Step 5.) Observe, then add the line to fill in the shoulder.
Step 6.) Observe then add the legs. Notice that his pants are worn very high, so his legs are slightly longer than his upper body.
Step 7.) Add Bruce Lee's ankles and feet.

Hint number 1 is to see things as shapes. I like to analogize drawing with assembling a jigsaw puzzle because in both you look for shapes to fit together Hint number 2 is to pay close attention to the edges of what you are drawing. Light and shadows can do funny things and in almost anything that you draw you will see a disparity between the qualities of each edge. Hint number three is to develop your drawing like a Polaroid photograph. Polaroid was the company that innovated instant photography. After pushing the shutter button the photograph would come out of the camera and develop before your eyes. What I want you to know about this is that every part of the photo would develop at the same rate and that is how I want you to try to draw next time. In other words, move the drawing tool around, dont get stuck in a favorite spot. Alright, lets slow it down. What you are seeing me do here is pay close attention to the form and the proportions. In other words, I am comparing the sizes of the different shapes and making sure that the placement of each line is correct. I am using vine charcoal a HB pencil and an eraser. I started out with the vine charcoal because it is easy to erase and move around. You will see later in this video that after I am satisfied with the placement of the charcoal, I will hatch over it with a pencil to keep it undisturbed. I am also trying to be aware of the edges of my shapes and I am especially cognizant of the highlight on the top because that will require me shading the areas around it and using the white of the page as a representation of the strong light. Now when I look back at my reference, I notice that the tone of the background is much darker than the white of the page. I use the side of the charcoal to darken the mid tone of my drawing. This step will make it easy to draw in the highlights with an eraser a little bit later. Now I am folding a piece of paper towel to smudge in the charcoal. You will get a very similar result with a blending stump (also known as a tortillion) but the towel will smudge the charcoal more quickly. To be perfectly honest, many teachers that I have had have told me not to use a blending stump, fingers or anything that comes in to contact with the surface of the paper. I partially agree. Oil from fingers when combined with pencil or charcoal leaves a stain that is tough to work around. Notice that my hand is resting on a sheet of paper. Artists call these slip sheets, but it is just a sheet of computer paper. I like working with the blending stump and the paper and this process works for my needs. It would be dishonest if I changed my process for the sake of making a video. Before, I mentioned the term hatching. Hatching is the short name for the drawing technique of cross hatching. It is simply putting a series of lines next to one another with a drawing tool. These lines usually follow the shape of the object that is being drawn. Once I am done adding pencil marks, I take the blending stub to burnish over my hatch marks. This gives my drawing a more smudged look and possibly my former art teachers a heart attack. I like to smudge the pencil and charcoal because it also gives me a surface that is smooth in tone. Hatching can be layered and I usually stop using the blending stump after the second layer. I once did ten layers of hatching in a pencil drawing. Lets recap and take this to the end of part 1. My focus, over the course of any drawing that I do from observation, is to see a simple pattern of shapes on my reference and to accurately render these shapes, on to the piece of paper that I am drawing. After I get the shapes aligned correctly, I attempt to build up tones with charcoal and pencil. When I am building the tones, I am very aware of the nuances of the edges of each shape, because they are usually different. My focus is also on building the tones of my drawing in a similar manner to how a Polaroid photograph develops.
In part 2, I will teach you a way to add color to any pencil drawing. Thanks for watching the video and please let me know if this helped.

Today, you are going to learn how to draw a 250,000 dollar sports car that goes 0-60 faster than Fred Flintstone on Red Bull.......Wait a second....it has power windows....make that 260,000 dollars. All you have to do is follow my step my step instructions and watch the shading tutorial and youll be able to draw the Lamborghini Gallardo. Lets get started/

Step 1: Draw the three trapezoids that you see. Take extra time to observe their placement. Due to the rules of perspective the large trapezoid at the top is rounded at its top.
Step 2: Dont Freak out! Look closely, all I added was a half circle with other shapes inside. Notice that the half circle is slightly smaller than the large trapezoid shape from step 1.
Step 3: Now here is the hard one! First, notice that I closed the shape on the right side. Second, notice that I added a rectangular shape directly below the smaller trapezoids from step one. Take time to notice the placement of the shapes within the rectangle. Finally, notice the horseshoe shape in between and below the shapes added from steps 1 and 2.
Step 4: Add the front tires and the fancy thingey on the door. If you made it through step 3, step 4 will be a breeze.
Step 5: Complete the back end of the car from observation. Take some extra time to notice the details of the rims and wheels.

This is my first step by step colored pencil tutorial. After you watch this video, you will have a solid understanding of how to draw a rose with colored pencil. I have simplified the instructions so that even a beginner could create a successful drawing. I will tell you about the colored pencils later in this video. But, for now, grab a regular pencil and some drawing paper. I have a quick recommendation before we begin. Hit the link in the video description and go to my website to download a printable page with our reference image. Lets begin.
Step 1: Draw a long rectangular shape for the stem.
Step 2: Take a moment to observe the proportions of the new shapes that I added. Notice that the leaf to the right overlaps the stem. The two shapes on top are positioned more to the left hand side.
Step 3: Now add the shapes for the bottom of the petals on the right hand side. Notice the U shape that is formed at the bottom of the rose. Notice that the upper shape on the right is slightly thicker than the upper shape on the left.
Step 4: Use your imagination a bit and notice the slightly skewed egg shape above the shapes from the first three steps. Once you notice how it fits, draw it on your paper.
Step 5: Add the four shapes which I just added around the egg shape.
Step 6: Use your observation skills and add even more shapes to the center of your rose. Do not stress if your drawing does not look exactly like mine. In portraiture, you need a likeness, but you don't need to be as exact when drawing a flower.
Step 7: The same rule applies with step seven. Use your observation skills, but don't stress extreme accuracy.

I am going to be using illustration markers, color pencils and oil paint. Just drop me a line if you have any questions

In step 1 I scanned and reprinted my original drawing- I do this for 2 reasons- 1.) If I mess up, I could just reprint it and 2.) marker and color pencil coexist better with printer ink than with graphite from a pencil.

Next I add a layer of the illustration markers. These markers are totally transparent and they enable me to add a layer of color and still be able to see the lines from my pencil drawing. These markers give the artist a similar effect to watercolor paint, but without the messy setup and clean up.. I am still following the Polaroid picture development analogy from the first video- in that I am adding color to all areas at an even pace and slowly building up the darker tones on the sides and bottom of the glass.

The color pencil is great at this point of the drawing, because it adds a translucent layer of color above the marker. In addition to that, color pencils are mixed with wax. The wax will be very handy in the next step when I add oil paint on top of the marker and color pencil. Working with color pencil also allows me to be very precise with my marks on the page. It can be very challenging to be as accurate with a paint brush. This step allows me to make my drawing more accurate and these clarifications will eventually be absorbed by the oil paint.

Now you are going to see me add three layers of oil paint to finish my drawing. I am using oil paint because I want to edit the colors of this composition and it is much easier to mix and match color with oil paint than it is with color pencil. It is also easier to apply large areas of color with a paintbrush rather than the tiny tip of a pencil. I did all of my editing in the last step and now I am just applying color, trying to notice the nuances of the edges of each shape on my reference. If I need to soften an edge I use a dry, soft brush and I pull the paint with that. The color pencil from the layer below is blending nicely with the paint.

This video is made for any person who wants to learn oil painting. This video will give you a solid base of knowledge. http://merrillk.com
Today, I am going to show you how to paint a puppy dog. I made this video for beginner to intermediate level artists, who wish to learn about traditional painting...I will try to show you how to paint. step by step. While I can imagine that painting a realistic looking puppy is intimidating for someone new to art, I will try to make my instruction as clear as possible, so that you can get in to great habits for the future. Once you are in good habits, you will progress very quickly.

I split this lesson in to four parts.

1.) Part one will cover what you need to know before you paint.
2.) Part two will give you an effective strategy for painting realistically The mentality of rendering (aka drawing what you see)
3.) Part three will walk you through the process of painting and I will give you tips while I paint. The process of "sculpting" a painting
4.) Part four will actually be a separate video and it will discuss glazing...a great finishing strategy. Glazing: Finishing a painting (Covered in another video)

Part 1.) I have two points to go over in Part 1-

1-1- First, pick a surface to work on. When I was learning painting, I would use cardboard in place of canvas to save money. Ten years later my original oil paintings are still in good shape. However, this would not be the case if I didn't prime the cardboard with layers of Gesso. Without getting over technical, gesso gives your surface a protective layer that will prevent the oil from being over absorbed. Try to remember this silly saying, "Paint with cream, not with butter or milk!" No, im not saying that you should break out the dairy prodicts.....I am referring to the consistency of the paint. Cream is not a solid like butter .....and is not watery like milk. When you apply paint to a surface it should be creamy in texture. You can make the paint creamy by adding about three to four drops of painting medium to the paint that is sitting on your palette. The object in my hand right now is called a palette knife. I used it to mix the paint with the painting medium. For a long time, I considered this step trivial, but it makes a difference!

1-2 Oil Painters use mineral spirits to clean off their brushes and to thin out a paint mixture. Mineral Spirits is also known commercially as paint thinner and sold as an art supply called turpenoid for quadruple the price. You will only need a SMALL amount of Mineral Spirits because its very powerful. Use it sparingly when you wish to thin out your paint; because too much will make the paint runny and "milk-like" in consistency. Here is a great tip to remember when cleaning your brushes.....WIPE-DIP-WIPE. As silly as that sounds, commit it to memory....In other words..... wipe your brush with a paper towel.....Then dip it in to the mineral spirits and swish it around....followed by another wipe with the paper towel to take the extra spirits off your brush. The last wipe is especially important to prevent the excess mineral spirits from thinning out your paint too much

Part 2

Now you will learn a great strategy to help you paint what you see. I call this strategy, "jigsaw puzzle observation" because it is similar to putting a jigsaw puzzle together. Jigsaw puzzles are fun because you fit shapes together to create an image.........I want you to think the same way when you paint. Try to see and identify shapes and then put them together like a puzzle. Painters sculpt and manipulate the paint on the surface of a painting until the shapes fit together as a recognizable image. Here....let me show you what I mean.....When you try this, I recommend that you get in the habit of looking at your reference image at least once for every five seconds; and then paint what you observed. After you get the bigger shapes in.....work your way down to the smaller shapes........ If you feel that you cant work the paint any more. Let it dry and repeat this step on top of the dried paint. You have an advantage by using paint because it is opaque and it can cover over any mistake...... Take your time with this step. Skyscrapers cant be erected without solid supports and good paintings cannot be made without careful placement.

Do you fake the funk on a nasty dunk? Little Old Man's "got game", but his skills are nothing compared to Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls (NBA- National Basketball Association), the man most responsible for keeping my Knicks without a title in the 1990's. It took me a long time to forgive MJ for that... but I think I have ...so I made a two video tutorial on how to draw him......Video 1 will give you step by step instruction on how to draw his head and video 2 will give you step by step instruction on how to draw his body. As always, hit the link in the video description to go to a printable step by step guide to help you draw and shade. Pause the video at the end of each step. Lets get started

Step 1: Draw an egg shape
Step 2: Put ears on the egg shape.... notice that the ear to your right is smaller than the ear to the left because his head is turned. Notice that their placement is on either side of the center of the egg.
Step 3: Add the two polygons that you see. Start each polygon at the top of the ear shape. Take some extra time to notice their shape and size. Then, just below the bottom of each ear, add a flat line, which we will later turn in to Michael Jordans nose. Finally, add a line for the mouth, one third of the way down, between the nose line and the chin line, at the bottom of the egg.
Step 4: Take a second to observe what happened to the nose line- I turned it in to three connected arcs. Notice the size and placement of the nostrils. Also add the sloping lines on either side of the nose
Step 5: Add the lines around the mouth. Notice that the top lip is M shaped and smaller than the bottom lip, which is shaped like an upside down rainbow. Also, observe and add Michael Jordan's moustache.
Step 6: Add the eyes and eyebrows. Take a second to notice their size and placement. The eyebrows are somewhat triangular, and lie on the inside corners of the polygons. The eyes are almond shaped and lie closer to the top, than the bottom of the polygon.
Step 7: Take some time to observe and add the lines for the shadows at the top of his head.
Step 8: Now observe and add the shadow lines on the bottom of the face.....He kind of looks like Darth Maul from Star Wars
Step 9: Add the lines for the ear on the left. If you wish, do the same for the ear on the right.

To shade I used a paint brush, graphite sticks, 3B, 6B and HB pencils, a blending stump (tortillion)....a q-tip can be substituted. I made this drawing on charcoal paper.

Michael Jordan played most of his career with the Chicago Bulls, but also played for the Washington Wizards. He took a year off to play in the White Sox organization (MLB- Major League Baseball) for the
Birmingham Barons after the death of his father James Jordan, He hit 203 and managed to hit 3 home runs and drive in over 50 runs. While jordan was with the bulls, he teamed with Scottie Pippen and Phil Jackson to win five championships. Michael Jordan finished his career with the highest PPG average."how to draw famous people step by step" how to draw basketball players step by step

If you own a computer, and you have a myspace account, chances are, you have seen what is known as the myspace self photo....also known as the TOO MUCH INFORMATION profile pic! These photos are usually a combination of blatant misspelling and nudity. Sexxii Grannii (Sexy Granny) ON DECK (Whatever the HELL that means)!

As an artist, it is my job document what exists in the world around me. Right now (early 2010), the social networking sites are king......so I created this mixed media artwork, based upon a scary picture that I saw on Myspace.

I took a mixed media approach in creating this work.
1.) Pencil- I used the pencil to sketch the initial pose. I do not do any shading while working with the pencil (in step one)
2.) Illustration Marker- Prismacolor and Chartpak Ad markers allow me to put down layers of color quickly. These markers leave transparent marks of color, similar to watercolor paint and often, their vibrancy can be seen through layers of translucent color (added later).
3.) Color Pencils- The fine tip of color pencils allow me to make marks with extreme precision. I use prismacolor color pencils because they blend extremely well and are compatible with oil paint.
4.) Oil Paint- The most versatile medium. Oil paint can be applied in thick "impasto" style or in thin transparent glazes. In this case, I tried to finish my work......but I decided that I needed to make a few changes.
5.) In order to make those changes, I let my work dry, then scanned it, then opened it up in....
6.) Photoshop (And Paint Shop Pro 9)- THese two computer programs allow me to do digital collage and edit/refine my work. In this case, I changed the posture of the character.
7.) Print- On SPECIAL paper (hit the link)
8.) Color pencil- to bring out the tones (again) and prep the paper for oil paint (yes, it is a good primer). Also the color from the color pencils mix with the oil paint, which creates a cool effect.
9.) Oil Paint- Finishing touches
10.) Scan
11.) Save as a PNG file....so that I can use this character multiple times.
