Time Lapse educational video by Merrill Kazanjian

Step 1- Sketch of the structure of the human face.

Step 2- For step two, I am using a computer scissor to cut out the features of the face from various photographs that I have collected. After I cut them out, I digitally juxtapose them over my simple facial sketch. Artists have called this a digital collage or a photo-manipulation, but I like to say that I am Frankensteining the face together.

This process has evolved from a need to work faster. My main area of expertise is oil painting but some of my paintings have taken me over a year to complete. In addition to being an artist, I am also a full time teacher and a new father. So free time is truly a luxury; I had to come up with a creative way to do my work and this is one of several techniques that I use.

In my opinion, there is no artistic medium that can compete with the surface beauty of an oil painting. Hand made items will always be more beautiful than manufactured ones. I have seen a lot of Digital art that is mechanical and inorganic. But making digital art is a much faster process than making traditional art. I have a lot to say as an artist and not a lot of time to say it, so, for this piece, I am using this digital collage as an underpainting for what I will do later.


Step 3- In Step Three, I am lightening the areas that I plan to rework.

Step 4- For step four, print at maximum dpi and on the thickest paper that you can fit through your printer

Step 5- For step five we will cover the traditional part of tradigital- I am using prismacolor (prisma) pencils and illustration markers and decocolor paint markers. Prismacolor sells great colored pencils. Their covering power is very impressive. Their marks lie somewhere between translucent and opaque. They can be used to mimic scumbling and glazing. In order to glaze mix the color pencil with the prisma marker blender. Decocolor markers have a type of paint inside which is very similar to acrylic paint and has a similar covering power to acrylic paint. Whenever I need to make opaque marks, I use the decocolor markers.

Years ago, I would have considered a method such as this, cheating. I no longer feel that way because art is so much more than just drawing. Drawing is a way for an artist to communicate but it is not the only means that an artist could use to communicate. I feel that while this method is unconventional, it has allowed me to work faster and leave a human fingerprint on the artwork that I produce. The digital collage allows me to Frankenstein interesting facial features and come up with new imagery in a manner similar to the cutouts of Pablo Picasso and Romare Bearden.

I have made bodies in a very similar manner. It can be even more fun to digitally collage a body together. After I finish making a character, I like to use the character multiple times. Since I took my break from oil painting, exactly a year ago, in December 2007, I have made over 500 different characters. My characters are saved as digital files and are used multiple times in my artistic compositions. A sample of my latest work is at the end of this video. Thank you so much for watching!

I documented the steps that I took to draw/paint a friend of mine. Local (Queens NYC) Baseball/Stickball/Handball legend Joseph "KJ" Alexander Moretti.

Mixed Media- I started out with a drawing, then used Prismacolor Illustration markers, then color pencils, then oil paint and finally, I finished my artwork with Photoshop.

This video will teach you how to draw the greatest Rubiks Cube teacher in the world. Mr. Dan Brown.....Also known as Pogobat,......Before I say another word, I would like to confess that I once peeled the stickers on my rubiks cube and then rearranged them to look like I solved it. I gained nothing out of that experience. But I did carry it around to impress my friends. Today, you are going to watch a tutorial that ...... if I do my job......... portraiture will be as easy as peeling stickers from a rubiks cube.....But you will gain than I did when I cheated on the rubiks cube. You will learn that you can draw anything if you learn how to break images down in to shapes.......And then put those shapes together like a puzzle. Ill show you what I mean. Grab a pencil and paper. Lets begin.

Step 1: Cut a piece of paper in to a perfect square.
Step 2: Make a long oval that is tilted towards your left. Pay extra close attention to how it is situated within the square. Use the borders of the square to help you make this shape.
Step 3: Add the crescent moon shape. Notice that it overlaps the oval shape. Again, use the borders of the square as a guide to help you situate the crescent moon shape.
Step 4: Make the shape for the neck below the oval shape from step two.
Step 5: Wait! Hold up! Don't go Pogobat! Yes, I gave you a lot of new shapes, but these barely matter for the likeness. Put them in as closely as you can but don't stress it.
Step 6: Divide the oval shape in half.
Step 7: Add the shape for the bottom of the nose. Connect it with the line that crosses the middle of the face.
Step 8: Add the anger lines to the nose. This is an awesome picture to learn the facial expression of rage. I guess this time he didnt solve the rubiks cube.
Step 9: Wait! Whats that thing on his nose? Its called rage! The muscles on your face pull the bottom of your nose up and backwards. And this small shape is created. Here is a close up. Add rage now.
Step 10: I just added the eye shapes. Before you draw, notice the X shape that is happening between the eyebrows and the anger lines.
Step 11: Add the angry M shape for the upper lip.
Step 12: Add the angry W shape for the lower lip.
Step 13: Add the shape for the hair.
Step 14: The ears go from the top of the eyes to the bottom of the nose.
Step 15: Add horns that will make the dude from Skyrim jealous.
Step 16: Add the eyebrows.
Step 17: Add the upper eyelid.
Step 18: Complete the upper eyelid by making it a banana shape.
Step 19: The eyes are half circles. Make them narrow half circles.
Step 20: Add the shapes under the eye.
Step 21: Now its time for teeth. Make 6 teeth visible in the upper row and center 2. The gum line is about 3/4 the height of the middle teeth.
Step 22: Add the lower row of teeth. Notice that there is no gum line.

This is a mixed media portrait of youtube user BronyaCovooper. He is a sculptor, and a musician! The music in the background is by his former band Jonny and the Shamen. Check out his page here . I used a mixed media approach to create this portrait. Here were the steps.....

4.) then I scanned what I did so far and opened it up in.....

What happens when the faces of three dictators are merged? Megazord and the Power Rangers have nothing on "Hugmadenijong ill". Check out this video to see some tradigital artwork by artist Merrill Kazanjian. It is done in time lapse (2 hours in to 2 minutes). I started out with the computer program Paint Shop Pro 8 (a stone age version of Photoshop) to cut and arrange a photomontage. Next, I printed on thick paper. After that, I tied it together with a layer of color pencil. Finally, I put the finishing touches on with oil paint. The method that I use is called Tradigital Art. It combines traditional media (paint, pencil) with digital media (computer applications and digital photography).

And .........Have you ever read bull? Chances are it comes from the pages of a contemporary art magazine........We'll give you just as much caffeine in Matt Keeney's segment. The Google Art Project is kind of like Google maps street view...........but for art museums. The viewer can virtually walk through several of the most acclaimed museums in the world; including the Tate Gallery, London; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; and the Uffizi, Florence. Users can log in with their Google Account to create their own collection. YouTube has been fully integrated in to the Google art project because several partner museums have now opted to include guided video tour to their galleries. This provides users the option to virtually walk through a museum themselves and listen to an audio guide at certain artworks, or to follow a video tour as an expert guides them through a gallery.

Its a great resource! And its really cool of Google Tube to do this.....But we all wish that they would pay the same attention to contemporary YouTube artists. Thank goodness we have Yoz! Here is her segment.

It appears we have some breaking news. YouTube has pulled the plug on Topic Search, which to date was the best way to find specific genres of visual arts on youtube.


Youtube has given all visual artists a way to directly communicate with their audiences. Its called a live hangout. Executive Producer Merrill Kazanjian will now show you how to do a live hangout on your youtube channel.

YouTube has entered PBS Visual Arts Show Art21 in the on the rise competition for June 2012. The voting has ended and the winner will be announced on the YouTube Creators blog in a few days. YouTubers such as CartoonBlock and ThePortraitArt have been featured in this competition before. The winner gets featured on the YouTube Homepage and exposed to 1 Billion people.

One billion is a big number and for our 2D segment, Thad Taylor will introduce us to an artist who works big, His name is Barry Jazz Finnegan and he is not known by 1 billion people yet, but his legend is quickly growing. Lets take a look.

A painting by noted artist Merrill Kazanjian. Hey remember me. It's Merrill. The guy who does the step-by-step videos on YouTube. And crazy artwork uh... I am going to tell you what I've been up to over the past few months and I'm going to repay an old debt to Terrence from TerrenceAnimation who has waited so patiently for his portrait. You saw just a second ago he had his artwork listed on KnicksNow.com. That was one-half of the prize. The other half of the prize is this mixed media painting. That is what I'm doing in this video. So I said it's a mixed media painting and I am using paint shop pro (a computer graphics program). I like to start with a start out with a photo collage. Terrence seems like an interesting guy. You should see his entry. You could go back and visit his channel to see the winning entry, but I could tell that he is a really interesting person and i think that just a traditional oil painting would really not fit his personality. so I am going to go little bit crazy making art today. I'm going to put some of my old characters in to this work. I'm going to photo collage some of these monks (old drawings). You'll see what i'm getting at a it's a little crazy now but you'll see what I'm getting at. So he had this great look on his face and I had to do something with it and again I didn't feel that an oil painting was it was the right way to go about this. All of those months that you see were basically drawn but not the traditional way. The robes were only drawn once. I scanned that drawing and connected that with illustration marker and paint marker and what I did was: I scanned it and I had each one of them in the same pose but I drew a different head for each monk. And I'd just basically put it over the same bodies and that's one way computers can really make artwork interesting. Computers give you a new level and new depth and more possibilities for creating imagery. I didn't have to spend my time doing the same thing over and over and over again for the bodies. Now, This is my big investment. Its a Hewlett Packard Design Jet Print large format printer that prints onto canvas. I am putting the photo collage that made of Terrance, it is a "bobble head". A few months ago the Monks were part of the background to my channel. And of course I had to include the little old man. He is my trademark. When you have a channel named kazanjianm you have to use something memorable and that's the story behind the little old man. Let me also say uh...this wasn't intended but he kind of looks like my grandfather. So some people ask who is the little old man? I guess that it's my grandpa. So anyway its printing (on the printer) and what you are going to see me do is some painting directly over the print. Keep in mind it is on canvas. Canvas is not paper, it is linen so it is ok to put paint directly on to canvas. You don't get the same exact resolution as paint but you get something that is similar though. There is nothing in my opinion that's more beautiful than a painted surface... if you go to a museum even if you look at the older colors or fugitive colors. Colors can fade over time with exposure to light and certain pigments have faded. It is still more beautiful that a photograph taken over the past twenty years... when you look at the surface when you see the depth... photos are just one layer and painters create many opaque and transparent layers in paintings. I think that's what makes the artwork really, really interesting. So I am using paint to go over it now. without There is a link in the video description for the supplies I used. I am also using paint markers because they are accurate and create straight lines without running out of paint.... Paint brushes are not always the most accurate things. They're great for mixing colors that you can't makes lines as well as you can with paint markers. You cant mix paint as well with paint markers. You can mix them a little bit but the tips get dirty. The only way to clean them is to rub them on a piece of paper. With paint brushes you can't make the solid lines, you always wind up running out of paint uh... paint markers it's the opposite.
There's no perfect art supply uh... but I kind of mix and match uh... and I really like the digital stuff as well. The mixed media approach kind of helps make things interesting...

- Its been four weeks since my last video....Where have I been?
Lets just say that I have read more figure drawing books in the past month than I did in my entire life....and I have an ambitious plan. I created a series of figure drawing videos that will be as comprehensive as a college course and a heck of a lot less expensive.

Here is the plan- We will start out with five videos on human proportion. I studied the notebooks of Leonardo Davinci as well as other more recent masters to comprise a formula for drawing the human body. Next, I am going to three videos on observation skills and I will pass on advice from masters such as Harold Speed and Kimon Nicolaides. Finally, I will give you a chance to practice what you learned about proportion and observation in an ongoing series of videos where you will be able to practice figure drawing from your computer screen.

And please know that this new series does not mean that I am stopping production on all of the other types of videos on my channel

Your challenge is to create an artwork that celebrates Amare Stoudemire's contributions to the New York Knicks. Unlike last time.......I am not judging the winner. The winner will be chosen by a member of the New York Knicks organization. I am very happy about this since it was such a difficult decision last time. But, to give you a heads up, the judge is looking for creativity and skill, but in order to win, the challenge question must be answered.

In order to help you make a great work of art, I made these three videos to help you. You do not have to use them, you can feel free to be as creative as you want to be, but these videos are here to help you if you need them.
