Today, I decided to incorporate oil pastels in to a mixed media work of art. I also used/combiled oil paint illustration markers and Prismacolor Color Pencils to create the portrait that you see. I describe my process as I narrate: First, I did a pencil sketch which I inked. Second I used illustration markers (Prismacolor and Ad Chartpak) to lay down the first layer of color. Then I added a layer of oil pastels atop the layer of illustration marker. The oil pastels are more mixable than the color pencils and are also more opaque. They mix with liquin (like the color pencils and oil paint). I discovered that the process closely resembles painting (especially) when you mix the pastels on a palette, with liquin and then apply with a paintbrush. I finished my (quasi- Bob Ross demonstration) with a few layers of oil paint, since there is no substitute for oil paints mixability and layering capabilities (as well as the range of opacities). I am happy with the portrait that I made of youtube user armanchik24. I learned a lot while incorporating the oil pastels in to my artwork.

What is Glazing? The technical answer is 1.) multiple thin layers of transparent oil paint (applied at the end of a painting)....but what I want YOU to remember is 2.) Glazing is pure magic 3.) Knowing how to glaze will take your painting abilities to the next level.

1.) Why glazing is an important painting strategy
2.) (We will touch a little bit on) The science of refracted light
3.) Which paints to use. (How can you tell if a paint is a glazing color?)
4.) Which brushes to use for glazing
5.) How to do it! (The technique of glazing oil paint)

Glaze layers happen at the final stages of a painting, so lets take you to the end of the painting that you just saw right now. I am going to keep things concise and to the point. Give me your full attention for the next few minutes and you will acquire a solid understanding of glazing.

1- Why is glazing an important painting strategy?

Think about the last time that you had a sunburn. When sunburns heal, a layer of skin usually peels off your body. Take a second to remember what that skin looks like. The peel of skin is very thin, smooth and it is possible to see light through it.

Our outermost layers of skin, the epidermis, is comprised of multiple layers of skin similar to the peeled layer of skin that you just imagined. Glazing, the application of multiple, thin, transparent to translucent layers, is like the epidermis of a painting and it is important for an artist to know how to glaze so that he or she can get a more life like effect to their work.

2- The Science of Refracted Light
Light refracts through the transparent and translucent layers of a painting. In other words, it penetrates these layers and picks up any color that these layers contain. A good analogy for this concept is a seashell on the beach. Think of how the color of a seashell seems to change when it is covered with ocean water. The shell seems to change color, but in actuality, all physical characteristics of the shell remain the same. The sunlight refracting through the water alters the shells appearance just as glaze layers affect the final appearance of a painting.

3- Which paints to use
Paint colors have different characteristics. For instance, red, is not just red when it comes to painting. Cadmium red, the color on the left, is extremely opaque and has a great covering power. The color on the right, alizarin crimson is extremely transparent with a lesser covering power. Notice how you can see the blue line through the alizarin crimson, but not the cadmium red.

Most paint companies label the outside of their paint tubes to communicate these differences. Usually a box or circle is used to say if a paint is transparent, translucent or opaque. A filled box or circle is a symbol stating that a color is opaque while the opposite is true if a paint is transparent.

When you glaze, you would add painting medium such as liquin to the paint. It is easy to glaze with transparent colors such as alizarin crimson but it is also possible to glaze with the cadmium red. In order to glaze with an opaque color, use a little bit of paint and a lot of painting medium. I would advise any beginner or novice painter to stick with transparent and translucent paints.

4.) Which brushes to use

When you glaze, have multiple soft tipped brushes within reach. A variety of sizes and shapes including round tip and fan brushes are ideal. Now we are ready for the demonstration

I did the glazing in three sittings over 21 days. It is important to let the paint thoroughly dry between glazes. If it doesnt, you will start picing up some of the previous layer. Notice that I am starting off by using two brushes. One to apply paint and the other to move the paint around. This is called dry brush technique and it is your most important glazing strategy. Dry brush gives you a smooth untextured finish......

I wouldnt recommend this for anyone trying glazing for the first time, but I am actually using titanium white when I create a highlight.....that is a white with extreme covering power....equal to what you saw with cadmium red. I use that only in the brighter highlight areas and when I use it, I use a ton of painting medium with it. ........

The shadows get a little tricky, I try to look at my reference photo to match the shape but I am very aware of their edges as well. If there is a soft edge, I soften it with another dry brush....This is VERY IMPORTANT....Do not clean your brush in mineral spirits or turpenoid. Instead, just wipe your brush on a paper towel because those paint thinners will dissolve the entire glaze.....If a brush becomes unworkable, put it aside and use another soft tipped brush.

"Come as You Are", but bring a pencil......because you are going to learn how to draw Kurt Cobain step by step, "On a Plain" piece of paper. "All Apologies" if this intro gives you an "Aneurysm", I just want to state that if you think that your drawing skills have "Plateaued" you should try my step by step videos to get them "In Bloom". My videos wont "Drain you" and you wont think they're "Dumb"....unless if you're a "Negative Creep"......and I have over 100 on my channel so be sure to "milk it"........... So, unless if you have "Something in the Way", please commit a "Sliver" of time to learning how to draw Kurt Cobain. Please don't forget to Subscribe. Just click on my "Scentless Apprentice" who "Smells Like Teen Spirit"..................SUBSCRIBE........................Sorry, I have "Tourettes".........Err "Nevermind.

Step 1: Draw the arch and the two shapes. Notice that the shape on the left is egg shaped and the shape on the right is shaped like home plate in the game of baseball.
Step 2: Add the hair shape on the left side of the page. Dont stress, this shape doesnt have to be perfect but it should be proportionately larger than the shape from step one.
Step 3: Add the hair shape on the right side. Dont stress out on the hair shape, but take extra time on the shape of the face.
Step 4: Add the nose shape. Draw what you see rather than what you know. The nose looks like this because of a strong shadow shape. Just trust me and draw it.
Step 5: Add the mouth shape. The top lip is like a flattened M and the bottom lip is like a cereal bowl. Be sure to notice its placement compared to the other features of the face.
Step 6: Fill in the eye shapes. Take extra time on this step. The eyes are the key to the likeness.
Step 7: Add the shapes to the hair. These do not have to be placed perfectly since hair is a "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter".
Step 8: Add the shapes for the facial hair.
I am combining two methods called 1.) cross hatching and 2.) smudging.....right now. Pause the video at different points and use the image on the screen as your reference image. It doesnt get very dark under the eyes.......however, above the eyes (between the eye and the eyebrow) it gets very dark. Kurt has dark and full eyebrows. Use a #2 (HB) pencil to start. Dont be scared to press hard in the eye region. The nose is tricky. The darkest part is the nostril (not part of the step by step video). But the entire shape of the bottom of the nose gets pretty dark. After, I fill it in, observe it, then draw it. I am using a #7 Bristle Flat brush for the shading. The top lip is dark and solid in shape. The LEFT side of his face (the side on YOUR right) is lighter in tone than the right side. The bottom left corner of the page will get very dark. I "went right in" with a 6B pencil. REMEMBER, shading is all about RELATIVITY, so compare the tones of the different areas of the image, The shape at the bottom of the face will eventually be blended in with other dark tones. In order to make the hair "pop out" you need to darken the background. (Its all about relativity!!!) The hair is a LOT of Adding....then erasing.....adding...then erasing ....Be sure to make your strokes in the same direction at the hair in this reference image.....Notice that I am using the eraser to "draw". Now the "PORTRAIT" begins....Now it looks like a human being......but I have to "wrestle" with it to make it look like Kurt Cobain. Use a slip sheet (look under my hand) when you get this far. The darkest areas have several layers of hatching. (8B pencil).

A time lapse video demonstration of an illustration of artwork that I created of Sarah Palin, Gouverner of Alaska, former Vice Presidential Candidate. Artist Merrill Kazanjian uses illustration markers (AD Markers) and color pencils (Prismacolor) to create the illustrated portrait. First, he made a contour pencil sketch without shading. Second, he set the base tones with the markers and then proceeded with several layers of color pencil work. Kazanjian is a New York based contemporary artist who uses a wide range of media in his work. He is best known for his tradigital art work and for his youtube channel kazanjianm. his website is Merrillk.com.

Do you know what there is a pink bunny visible from outer space? Well I did! Let me show you what I mean. After I read about this pink bunny and started navigating Google Earth, I began to wonder.........What else is visible in the Google Earth Art Gallery? In this video you will find some of the coolest artwork, visible from outer space. Some of these artworks have videos made about them already, and I will put the links in the upper right hand corner of the video player. I have barely scratched the surface of what is out there, so if you know of something cool. Put its Geo tag in the comments so others can find it. The geo tags of everything mentioned in this video are in the video description.

I have a confession... I had no clue who Emilie Autumn was when my FB peeps voted for her......Once there is a little person in your life calling you DAD, you cease to be COOL anymore! So I googled her and she's a fascinating gal. I have only heard a few of her songs but she seems to be "Tori Amos with a Violin". Thats a big compliment.....Tori was huge to my generation! I am using 3 photo references for this mixed media artwork. And I am drawing EACH on a SEPARATE piece of paper. (The plot thickens)! OFF TOPIC: I once got in to a FIGHT with a VIOLIN PLAYER.......But I swallowed my pride and walked away......Because VIOLINS SOLVES NOTHING! I have MORE FUN working LOOSELY.....I am NOT trying to make this PHOTO-REALISTIC.....Artists are sketchy people! Now I am drawing the pants.....When this artwork is done....everything will be together. I will explain why I do this later..........Now I am drawing the pants.....When this artwork is done....everything will be together. I will explain why I do this later..........Pro's Tip: BUY GREY PAPER. If you draw on white paper....YOU'RE DRAWING ON A FRIGGING HIGHLIGHT!!!!! Neutral toned paper can allow artists to leave BOTH highlights and shadows. Pro's Tip: BUY GREY PAPER. If you draw on white paper....YOU'RE DRAWING ON A FRIGGING HIGHLIGHT!!!!! Neutral toned paper can allow artists to leave BOTH highlights and shadows.Just kidding! I gave her one leg because I am going to flip it in Photoshop. CONFESSION: I feel a lot of pressure when I draw because I know that everyone wants to learn how to get a realistic likeness. I ENJOY, stuff like (what I am doing in this video) MUCH MORE! I take a sketchbook with me almost everywhere. ......Like I said.....Artists are sketchy people! I use prismacolor colored pencils! They ROCK! Ideally, you DO NOT want to mix them with graphite pencils. They get smudgy (you should erase the graphite first).....but its OK....what I do next will fix things.I use prismacolor colored pencils! They ROCK! FACT: Emilie Autumn's hair is not naturally FLUORESCENT!!!!!! For the Record, the artist who draws the BEST HAIR on YouTube is SophieChan90. She uses markers too. CLICK HERE to visit her channel. But COME BACK!!!!!! Don't get mesmerized by the hair! That is a Decocolor opaque paint marker.

The Art Gallery Alpha Males rock it out in the New York Subway. Kunst recites a poem that he made about MFA's or Masters in Fine Art. This is also meant to be a critique of early twenty first century "Art World" culture. Mentioned are the artists Damian Hirst and Andres Serrano. A short film by Merrill Kazanjian Merrillk.com. I sampled the fantastic U2 track, "Desire"from Rattle and Hum, in this four minute fifty second movie. The Art Gallery Alpha Males are meant to be a parody of New York City Art Gallery culture; which is often referred to as, the "Art World". Also mentioned in this film is Adolf Hitler. Kazanjian wryly penned that Adolf Hitler was a MFA- A "Megalomaniac From Austria", even though he was rejected from art school and became a dictator who murdered millions of innocent people. Kazanjian criticizes that there is a market for his work (Hitler art sold for over 200,000 dollars in 2006).Francois Pinault, Larry Gagosian , Sir Nicholas Serota, Glenn D Lowry, Samuel Keller, Eli Broad, Charles Saatchi, Matthew Slotover, Amanda Sharp, Frieze magazine and art fair, Bruce Nauman, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Brett Gorvy, Amy Cappellazzo, Christie's, Robert Storr, Iwan Wirth, Zwirner & Wirth, Marian Goodman, David Zwirner, Gerhard Richter, Marc Glimcher, Jay Jopling, Mike Kelley, Paul Schimmel, chief curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, LA, Andreas Gursky, Cheyenne Westphal, Tobias Meyer, Barbara Gladstone, Thelma Golden, Studio Museum, New York, Victoria Miro, London, Dakis Joannou, Richard Prince, Don and Mera Rubell, Donna de Salvo, Shamim, Momin, Chrissie Iles, Whitney Museum of American Art, Daniel Birnbaum, Portikus Gallery, Frankfurt, Steven A Cohen, Michael Govan, Simon de Pury, Phillips de Pury auction house, Sadie Coles, Robert Gober, Eugenio Lopez, Bruno Brunnet, Nicole Hackert, Philipp Haverkampf, Francesca von Habsburg, Jeffrey Deitch, Nicholas Logsdail, Lisson Gallery, Thomas Hirschhorn, Iwona Blazwick, Whitechapel art gallery, London, The Wrong Gallery, New York, Jeff Wall, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Serpentine gallery, Ingvild Goetz, Pierre Huyghe, Tracey Emin, Gilbert and George, artists, collector and gallerist, Dominique Levy, Robert Mnuchin, Harry Blain and Graham Southern, Roberta Smith, New York Times, art critic, Herzog & de Meuron, Swiss architects, Jerry Saltz, Village Voice, Frank Gehry, Javier Peres, Christine Macel, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Eileen Norton, Los Angeles collector, Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz, Ralph Rugoff, Hayward Gallery, Max Hetzler, Berlin-based gallerist, Miuccia Prada, fashion designer, Neo Rauch, Gerd Harry Lybke, Carsten Holler, Maureen Paley, Zach Feuer, Ai Weiwei,

Prior to 2008, I had never ventured outside of the medium of oil paint. Life got HECTIC and I was forced to reconsider my approach. Here (below) is the story.
For the past eight years, I have taught art in schools in Harlem and the South Bronx and my technique was created out of a need that arose in my classroom. Forty five minute periods is not enough time to teach painting. So I switched my painting supplies from traditional supplies, to paint markers to eliminate the set up and clean up. After witnessing the success that my students were having, I decided to push the technique even further, while working in my studio. I learned that mixing color pencils with a "blender" (on top of the opaque layers of the paint markers) marker allows an artist to mimic the effects of glazed oil paint. I incorporated media "cut outs" and printed images in my work. And I found that paint markers were ideal to tie everything together. Finally I learned that scanning my images on to a computer will allow me to edit my "characters" and add crazy effects such as juxtaposing images on top of my creations. The computer also enables me to use the medium that I am most familiar with; oil paint. I usually print my compositions on canvas ( I order an non varnished giclee print) and lay down the finishing touches in oil paint.

Grab your pencils and paper because YOU are going to draw Amare Stoudemire, All Star Forward of the New York Knicks.,,,,,Whats that you say? Drawing Amare looks difficult? Well that's just silly talk. I don't care if you've never picked up a pencil before! Im gonna be your point guard and I will assist you by making this difficult task as easy as possible. For example, hit the link in the video description and you will be taken to a webpage with photos and text to accompany this video. In other words, this isnt a half court shot, this is a slam dunk. So if you want to learn to draw, dont get left behind like Steve Nash.....grab your pencil and lets begin.

Step 1: Draw the shape for the jersey. It is about three times as tall as it is wide. Leave enough room on the top for the head and the bottom for the legs.
Step 2: Draw in the three shapes that you see. The first is similar to a banana and the second and third are circular. Notice their placement compared to the jersey shape.
Step 3: Add in the arms.....Wait! Dont freak out! This step is easy if you see the 2 trapezoid shapes in between the arms and torso.
Step 4: Add Amar'e's basketball shorts and his legs. Together they are similar in height to his basketball jersey.
Step 5: Add the shape for the neck.
Step 6: Sculpt the hands out of the shapes from step 2. Use the original shape as your guide.
Step 7: Add the folds and the star to his shorts. These do not have to be perfect.
Step 8: Add the star and the upside down house shape to his jersey. Ignore the head for now. I will give you a close up and detailed instructions on that in a minute.
Step 9: Use the nagative space to sculpt out the letters E.A.S.T. in the upside down house shape.
Step 10: Add the number one below the star and the word "the" above the word East. Also darken the collar and add the shapes for the folds on the shoulders of the jersey,
Step 11: Add the four shapes for Amare's mouth and facial hair. We will add more shapes to this in the next step. For this step, it is helpful to notice the diamond shape around the mouth.
Step 12: Add the line that I just added to form the top lip, below the moustache.
Step 13 is the trickiest step. There are 7 teeth visable. The two front teeth in the center. Three to your left and two to your right. One is blocked in shadow. Notice that there is more space below the teeth than above the teeth. Draw what you see.
Step 14: Add the nose shape. Notice where it lines up to the smile lines from the previous step. It is ok to shade the nostrils very dark because they will be in shadow.
Step 15: Extend the head and draw in the shape for the eyes.
Step 16: Add the ears. Notice that the bottom of the ear shapes line up with the bottom of the nose.
Step 17: Add the hair.
Step 18: Add the eyebrows.
Step 19: Add the shape for the eyes.
Step 20: Shade the eyes. Notice that the lines get thicker as they move towards the ears. Leave a small space in each eye for a highlight.

Now its time for you to choose a shading tutorial, so click on the image of Amare's body to go to the body shading tutorial or his face to go to the tutorial for the head. When youre done be sure to check out my tutorials on Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

He averages 26 points 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal per game. NO! NOT this guy......THIS GUY! Mr. Amare Stoudemire....also known as Stat. The New York Knicks and I are holding a contest to celebrate Stat's achievement of being chosen as a starter in the NBA all star game.

Your challenge is to create an artwork that celebrates Amare Stoudemire's contributions to the New York Knicks. Unlike last time.......I am not judging the winner. The winner will be chosen by a member of the New York Knicks organization. I am very happy about this since it was such a difficult decision last time. But, to give you a heads up, the judge is looking for creativity and skill, but in order to win, the challenge question must be answered.

In order to help you make a great work of art, I made these three videos to help you. You do not have to use them, you can feel free to be as creative as you want to be, but these videos are here to help you if you need them.

Now lets get to the fun part.....The Grand Prize.....or should I say, prizes. Prize number 1 is identical to last time....an oil portrait of you....done by me. I will document the process on video and send you the finished work......But theres one more BIG prize this time......The winner will also be featured on Knicks.com and Knicksnow.com.....two sites that have thousands of visitors each day! Its an opportunity for you and your art work to gain a lot of exposure.

Now for the rules. Be sure to follow each of these rules carefully in order to enter the contest. Rule 1: All competitors must be subscribers to my youtube channel and should also register with knicksnow.com.

Rule 2: Write the words, "Im in" in the comments area below this video.
Rule 3: Post your entries as a video response to this video or to my Facebook "like page". Just hit the box on my channel page to get there.

Finally a friendly reminder that any artistic medium is ok for this contest..........The deadline for entries is March 10th. Good luck, and even though I am not judging, I look forward to seeing your entries and I will comment on each one.

Music is by Kevin MacLeod....Human Beat

Title of Artwork: Caffeine Junkie Coffee People

Art Supplies Used: Prisma Markers and Color Pencils + Oil Paint + Photoshop

Art Process: It was made with a variety of media; both traditional and digital (tradigital). I started out with pencil and sharpie markers, to set deep base tones that will be seen after several layers are added. Next, I used illustration markers as a quick means of adding the first layer of color. Next, I used color pencils to create a layer of translucent, blended color. The color pencils also serve as a ground for the oil paint layer (which is next). I use oil paint because it is so versatile, it can be applied thin or thick and it is easy to mix a range of colors- which is important when you are mixing flesh tones. I finish the artwork with oil pastels and color pencils. Then I scan it, cut it out on photoshop and juxtapose my two characters over a digital photo. Please comment, rate and subscribe if you wish! I try to answer all of my comments!

To draw the head from any angle you must first understand its basic structure. Look past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This ability to simplify can be applied to the features of the face, but when starting the drawing you could look even further. Ignore even the features and simplify to the most basic form of the head. I use a method taught by Andrew Loomis in his book, "Drawing the Head & Hands".
The head deconstructed into its basic forms, is a sphere as the cranium and a block as the jaw and cheek bones.A Sphere as the Cranium
The sides of the head are flat, so we can slice off a piece from both sides of the ball. From profile, this plane will be a perfect circle, but when drawing it from any other angle, it will appear to be an oval because of perspective. Divide this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the beginning of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the brow line. The top and bottom of the oval help you find the hair line and the bottom of the nose.A Block as the Jaw and Cheek Bones
Attach the shape of the jaw. The top will start at the brow line and the back will start at the center of the oval. This is a 3-D volume with a front plane, side planes, and bottom plane (bottom plane is seen from some angles).

0:27- Notice that I am using a mechanical pencil. It has thinner graphite and it helps me create subtle tones for the features of the face. 0:27 Bruno Mars has dark brown eyes. BUT, do not be tempted to go too dark right away, try to build slowly.0:30 The pupil of the eye is darker in tone than the iris. Notice that I left a small white space for a reflection in each eye. this is key to creating a realistic looking eye

0:35 If you havent done so already, erase the line from the top of the bowl shape that goes across the bottom of the nose.1:00- Notice that the C shaped shadow going from the eyebrow to the bottom of the nose has a WIDE VARIETY in tones. Press harder and use high number B pencils (4B, 6B, 8B) to create darker tones.1:18 Watch how I use the paper stump to start the shadow to your left. I "cross hatch" some lines, and then I spread the lines (graphite) with the stump. If you do not have a paper stump, use a Q-Tip.1:44- A singnificant marker on Bruno's face is the deep fold between the mouth and nose. To truly get his likeness, you will need to get that.2:03 - "Float like a butterfly and shade like a bee"....In other words, move around. Do not get stuck in one place. Develop your drawing evenly.2:24 The background on the right side of his face (your left) will eventually be as dark as the shirt tone that I just added.2:55- The paper below my hand is called a slip sheet. It allows me to rest my hand on the drawing without smudging it.3:18- Do NOT make the same MISTAKE I made. I RUSHED the background instead of hatching it in SLOWLY.3:50- At this point of the drawing and shading process, your goal should be to eliminate "lines" and notice the nuances of "edges". In other words, some shapes have solid edges, while others have softer edges. There is often a tonal difference as well.

3:50- Watch how I use the blending (paper) stump to soften an edge......Suggestion: Look in the mirror (right now) and notice the tonal and physical (hardness softness) differences of your face.4:27- The highlights and shadows on the right side of his face (your left) are very complex but important. Notice the darkness that goes down his cheek and the four highlights. 5:09 Watch me shade the left side of his face (your right side). It is very tricky. the dark values are very hidden.....but they are still there.5:48- The nose is tricky. The darkest part is the nostril. The entire shape of the bottom of the nose stays pretty light because the light source seems to be shining up from his left.
6:28- The darkest part of the mouth is the two corners.
6:52- My biggest mistake was going TOO FAST with shading the backgound. When you press hard it causes a crease/indentation in the page. When the paper gets damaged, your shading will be uneven. Youll see what I mean. 7:29- Rewind to 7:24 to see how I use the pencil and brush to blend two DIFFERENT TONED shadows together. 8:14- At this point of the drawing, I am going to use the high number B pencils to get the dark values in. I am also going to use the kneaded eraser to create highlights. 9:18- If you have any lines left (such as the one on the hat) get them out of your drawing. Look around at the world. It is expressed in shapes or masses, not lines. The most difficult part of pencil drawing ls realizing that you are working with a fine tip, capable of making only lines.
