In this video I will go over briefly about 6 different types of blending materials starting from the more conventional materials to the more make shift ones starting with regular blending stumps.

Blending stumps are my go to materials for blending since they are one of the easiest and best performing ones to use. I hardly ever clean mine because I have never had a need to do so. I just keep using the dirty ones over and over again.

Tortillons are another popular method of blending but I don't use these too much. They are hollow in the center and if you press too hard on the tip, they will become more of a rounded tip instead of a sharp one. They still non the less perform quite well.

A cloth is a very nice tool to have. They blend more smoothly than any other material and they will also take up graphite as well which can really come in handy if you have made an area too dark.

Paper towel is getting a bit more on the unconventional side and your results will strictly depend on the texture of your particular brand of paper towel. They leave a bit more texture than a cloth will which can give them some unique uses.

A paint brush is a tool that will blend graphite in a particular area but will not smear it around like other materials would. I use paint brushes to clean away eraser shavings more than blending.

A Q-Tip is just one of those things that nobody would ever really think to use as a blending material. It is what I will recommend to those that can't find blending stumps or just need a quick fix. They only last for so long but they are quite cheap and do the job rather well.

Hey everyone, welcome back to this weeks video where I show you to draw a couple of different trees. I drew these trees in a more lose like style to give them a little bit more character.

I start off the first tree with a line that re presents the entire tree. The bottom of that line represents the trunk and the top of the line where I start to really wiggle it around is the very top of the tree. I do this so that there are no issues with placing the entire tree on the page.

Once that line is done, I then go back in and start to design the trunk of the tree and work my way up to the branches making them smaller as I go. One issue that I had a lot of trouble with was making the tree look organic and less stiff. Avoid straight lines. Instead use curves, wiggles, and corner shaped lines for the trees to keep it looking organic.

Once the basic outlines of the tree is finished, shading comes next. I like to make my tree first look like a winter tree before adding leaves creating a summer tree. Choose a side of the tree you would like darker than the other and begin to shade. Shade in the direction of the tree's movement. This will help to simulate the bark and texture of the tree.

Once all that is done, you can leave your tree at what you have and call it a winter tree or take the next step and add in the leaves and see what you can create. Adding the leaves is much more simple if you think of it as adding in bunches of leaves instead of each single individual leaf. If drawing each leaf is your method of choice, you may be drawing for quite some time. I find that drawing the texture of a bunch of leaves translates to the eye just fine. It is the texture that conveys the image. Use an underhand grip so that maximum amount of graphite is in contact with the paper and use small circular motions while doing this. Use a variety of pencils to get different gradations to create volume.

The Second set of trees is out of my Mountains in the Mist drawing. I drew 3 trees very similar to them. Those I start out by drawing a straight line representing the whole tree. Then I usually start at the top of the tree making some small texture for the pine. I usually do the same underhand grip for this and work my pencil from the line outward in a slight upward motion. That way the branches have a slight arch to them. This helps to give it a bit of character and interest. I do like to make them look lush so I add in quite a few branches. Sometimes Ill make them a little bit more weathered looking by holding back on the amount of branches overall.

How to Draw a River

Welcome back everybody to part 6 of how to draw the mountains in the mist. This part focuses on how to draw the river in this scene. I will go over and show you the steps to create the reflections, small rapids, and overall polished look of the water.

For the main water part having a mix of different pencils will help you a lot! For the part where I reflect the trees, I use a 2B pencil and slightly draw in the trees to make the reflection. I do not want a perfect mirror reflection because remember, I am drawing a river. This water will be moving so any reflection will be heavily blurred and hard to make out details. Because of that, I only suggested a very rough tree like shape in the water.
Also try to leave a very small gap between the reflection and the river bank. It will help a lot to be able to tell where the water ends and the river bank begins.

When going in to draw a river, I use a 2H pencil for the most part. That pencil has a great ability to place lines down that blend very well with one another creating a seamless plane. It helps to give the water that shine to it from the light reflection. Also using a 2H pencil on top of the 2B pencil you used to create the trees will not cover up that detail at all. It will actually enhance it and make it a part of the water.

You can also go back in using a 4H pencil. This will help to fill in any gaps that the 2H pencil left and will further enhance the look of the overall drawing.

This will take practice to get down so don't worry if it doesn't come out correctly the first time.

December's challenge word is: CRYSTAL
The challenge is to make something using only the art supplies given in the box.

This is the first time I doodled crystals and it was fun to draw!

How To Draw Stewie Griffin by Evan Burse. Learn how to draw Stewie Griffin from Family Guy...step-by-step.

First, Draw a circle and cut that in half with a vertical line then a horizontal line. Then you're going to extend the top lines and the bottom to give him that football shaped head of his. Now the height of his head is equal to the height of his body.
And half way through him, put another sphere in there and below that a square. Then draw his center line, split his legs and then his belly area and his whole torso. His eyes fit just on the outer part of that inner circle. Right in the middle of that horizontal line is his eyelids, pretty simple to put in there.
His nose is almost like a triangle. Draw him a simple cartoony smile. And his pupils fit right in the center of that line. His eyebrows are simple lines. His ears are like a letter "C" with a small indentation on the inside of it.
And for his body you're going to go ahead and put his arms down. They come midway down his body and we're going to draw his arm behind his torso area to give it an overlap, to give it some depth. Draw his feet are like upside down teacups.
Now when you draw his overalls, make sure you draw them curved so they contour to his body to give the allusion that he does have volume in size to his body. You don't want to make them straight up and down.
Now the crotch area. You're going to darken in a few lines here. Peter Chin, the supervisor and director of family guy, did a pretty cool tutorial on Stewie already. I don't think I can improve on that much but he did a tutorial that you guys should check out as well. And for his fingers, he has the classic four fingers which most cartoon characters have.
And his hair, you want to start with the center hair strand on top then put the two on the sides that are next to his ears and then put the two that are midway between that. That way you can have them evenly spaced apart. Now if you want to ink Stewie, I suggest that you use this Pigma Micron 08 pen by Sakura. It's a pretty cool pen that will give you an even line across the entire drawing.
