How to Draw City Buildings: New York City Shadows
Step 1: Draw a vertical line at the base of your page
Step 2: Draw parallel diagonal lines for the left hand side of the first building
Step 3: Draw parallel diagonal lines to the right hand side of the first building
Step 4: Draw more buildings behind the first building, keeping to the three types of line
Step 5: Shade in the left side of each building
Step 6: Add lots of tiny parallel windows!
Step 7: Add darker shadows on the building behind, cast from the building in front!

I use a 4B pencil for this drawing. If you have a go, I found that the point of the pencil needs to look 3D and it is drawing the wrist of the other hand, which is just shown in line. Some shadow helps, as does turning the drawing around half way through.
