Mediums Will it work?
Oil paint over acrylic paint? Yes- Works flawlessly
Acrylic paint over oil paint? No- Will peel off in time.
Color pencil over oil paint? Somewhat- Color pencil over a single layer of oil paint will work, but if you have several layers of paint layered on a surface, pressing hard with the color pencil will dig up some oil paint.
Oil paint over color pencil? Yes- Works flawlessly
Oil Pastel over Oil Paint? Yes- However, oil pastels do not dry unless if you add Liquin or Fixative to them. So if you plan to add another layer of paint, be sure to mix some liquin in or spray the fixative on top of the pastel after you add it atop your painting.
Color pencil over oil pastel? No- The sharp point of the pencil will carve in to the soft oil pastel.
Oil paint over color pencil? Yes- My FAVORITE combination
Illustration marker over any other media? No- It will ruin the marker
Illustration marker under any other media? Yes- Works flawlessly
Color pencil over acrylic paint? Somewhat- Color pencil over a single layer of oil paint will work, but if you have several layers of paint layered on a surface, pressing hard with the color pencil will dig up some of the acrylic paint.
WHEN IN DOUBT........ 1.) Scan 2.) High Quality Print 3.) Use any of these media atop the print.
Medium Pros Cons
Color Pencil EXTREME accuracy. Decent Mixability Limited blendability. Color pencils cannot be layered.
Acrylic Paint Dries Fast. Extremely opaque (covers well). Does not mix with oil based mediums. Blending abilities are better than color pencils, but inferior to oil paint.
Oil Pastel Great mixability, decent accuracy. Does not dry without liquin or fixative (cannot be layered without liquin or fixative). Is not as accurate as color pencil.
Oil Paint Superior Mixability. Superior covering power. Can be applied in multiple opacities (Transparent, translucent, opaque). Dries slowly....TRIGGERS MY ADHD!!!!!!
Illustration Marker Fast way to add transparent color. Cannot be used OVER other media.
Scanner/Printer/Photoshop Sometimes a paper can be saturated with color and unworkable. Scanning and printing will let you start from where you left off. No texture remains after you scan and print. Mr. November

What you are seeing is a short time lapse of me layering color with illustration markers (prismacolor) and color pencils. I have discovered that using markers and color pencils is a much faster way to build a foundation for a painting (if you could still call it that). Today, I will add a third step to my process. In less than a minute I will teach you how to glaze oil paint. Glazing is a very well known oil painting technique that gives a work of art a more life like finish. I am a mixed media artist now but the first medium that I learned in my training as an artist was oil painting. Glazing was, by far my favorite oil painting process, but it would often take months to reach the point where I could glaze because of oil paints slow drying time. The crazy caricature of the little old lady with the gun took me less than an hour to make. Now, let me define glazing. Glazing is the act of adding transparent or translucent color to a painting. Water is a good example of transparency because you could almost perfectly see through it and candle wax is a good example of something that is translucent. Some light can shine through something that is translucent but only hints of color. You could usually tell if a color is good for glazing by looking at the tube of paint. Most paint manufacturers put a square on the outside of the tube indicating the paints opacity. If the square is empty or half full it is a good color to use for glazing.
You can download a list of the paints that I use for glazing on my website merrillk.com. Just type in Glazing in the search box. One last thing before we start to glaze. I recommend a product from Windsor and Newton called Liquin for glazing. It mixes very well with the wax from the color pencils.

Be sure to pause the video at the end of each step. Lets begin.

Step 1: Draw the 2 sets of symmetrical shapes. The eyebrow shapes resemble levers from pinball machines. The eyes are shut and the eyelids are folded tightly around the eyeball. The two sets of eyelashes have come together. Be sure to notice the lines around each eye and the two lines coming together in between the eyebrows.
Step 2: Add the two nostrils and the wrinkle lines around the mouth. Notice that the nose is foreshortened because the head is tilted backwards. In other words the nostrils are closer to the eyes and more rounded than when you look at a face straight on. Do not be tempted to put a line at the bottom of the nose. In this pose, that line does not exist.
Step 3: Draw in the mouth. Notice that it is comprised of four distinct shapes- the upper lip, the upper teeth, the inner mouth and the tongue. When people show the most common facial expression for grieving........ or sneezing, their bottom lip wraps around their bottom teeth. So remember, draw what you see here, rather than what you know to be true in a calm facial expression.
Step 4: Draw in the hair. This shape can vary a lot, so either draw what you see or be creative.
Step 5: Draw in the bottom half of the face and the ears. Notice that the ears are even with the mouth because the head is tilted back.

Its time for YOU to draw Beyonce. All that you will need is a pencil with an eraser, a blending stump or Q-Tip and a large index card. Be sure to stop the video at the end of each step and look at the reference picture on the computer screen. No drawing experience? Doesnt matter. You are gonna surprise yourself!
Step 1- Make a rainbow shape at the top of your large index card. Notice that the top of the rainbow is at the very top of the card. Then make the oval Notice that the bottom of the oval is more pointed than the top.
Step 2- Continue the line at the end of the rainbow down to the mid point of the card and then curve it upwards to the bottom of the oval. Do this on both sides.
Step 3- Try to match the two lines that I just added. Use the sides of the index card to gage their accuracy.
Step 4- Use your observation skills to draw the two lines that I just added. This will eventually be the bottom of Beyonce's left arm.
Step 5- Do the same for the top of her left arm.
Step 6- Now, create the top of her forearm. Hint, notice the shape that is formed in the background, think of this shape as a puzzle piece and use it to tweak the shapes around it.
Step 7- Create the V shape on her dress. Notice that the bottom of the V ends at the mid point of the shape that was formed in the previous step.
Step 8- I slightly changed the shape at the bottom of the hair on the left and created a neck. I also made another shape within the hair.
Step 9- I created another shape within the hair.
Step 10- I changed the side of her hair. I made 7 wild curls at the bottom with a wave above it.
Step 11- Take a second to observe and draw the shapes that I just drew on the other side of her hair.
Step 12- I exposed the neck some more by curling up the bottom of the hair on the left side of her head.
Step 13- I put a line for the shadow under her breasts
Step 14- I added an earring
Step 15- I added a belt
Step 16- I added two ovals on the face for the eye sockets. These will be broken down in to smaller shapes.
Step 17- I added a shape for the shadow on the right side of Beyonce's nose. Put this in very lightly
Step 18- I added Beyonces top lip. The shape is similar to a flattened McDonalds arch.
Step 19- I added Beyonce's bottom lip. Notice that it is wider than the top lip and has a shadow at the bottom.
Step 20- I added the eyebrows at the top of the eye socket
Step 21- I added her eyes. In this picture she is wearing a lot of eye liner, so the lines at the top and bottom of the eye could be similar in width.

After the step by step, I talk you through she difficult shading of the hair face and body. You will see me demonstrate strategies on how to shade hair with pencil, a tortillion (blending stump) and an eraser. I will also show you how to get a soft (smoothly shaded) face and how to build up the tones through layers of hatching to do the clothes and the body.

What happens when you merge the faces of Al Franken, Rush Limbaugh, Jon Stewart and Mark Levin? Probably somebody suffering from political schizophrenia! Aside from that, since Americans cant seem to agree on political issues, I decided to merge the faces of our conservative and liberal talking heads. I wish that political energy/resources could be used to do great things, but its not. Every time a see a mudslinging television ad, I wonder how much is spent on demonizing an opponent rather than funding a needed program (um......art is vanishing from schools). It seems that our political pundits pour fuel on the fire rather than bringing a sensible voice to the bickering. It is sometimes hard to remember that they are entertainers who depend on advertising revenue from their shows. It seems that "sensational" is more entertaining which doesn't do anybody any good. It frightens me that liberal and conservative, Democrat and Republican are becoming identities rather than ideologies and we forget that we are on the same side!

Pause the video at the end of each step. Draw what you see is what I suggest. Hit the link in the video description. Pop every pill of your prescription. Follow the guide. Learn at your pace. Step 1: Draw the three shapes that you see. Notice their size and placement in relation to the edges of this piece of paper.
Step 2: Add in the hair shape. Hair moves constantly so the placement of these shapes do not have to be perfect. Try to focus more on the trapezoidal shape in between the two hair shapes.
Step 3: Is one of the more difficult steos. Try to take your time and observe its placement and its subtleties. Notice that the fist is like a square shape tilted to the side on top of a triangle shape.
Step 4: Add the two shapes for the shoulders
Step 5: Add the shapes for the eyes and the tear drops
Step 6: Add the two shapes for the nose and the shadow below the nose
Step 7: Add the three shapes for the mouth. The third shape on the top is a highlight above the lip.
Step 8: Add the shapes to the hair. The most important of these shapes is the ear and earring on your right side. Also, be sure to add the double line for his chain.
Step 9: Take extra time on this step. It is very important for the likeness. Lil Wayne has very complex eyes. Try to see each shape and where it fits in to the bigger shape.
Step 10: Now its time to make his 4,335 tattoos. Lil Wayne has more ink than a pen factory. Dont stress out while doing these. Not even I drew each one correctly.
Step 11: More tattoos coming your way. Draw in the letters B and Y and improvise around the armpit
Step 12:Thats a glowing bird to the left. If you dont like glowing birds, improvise.
Step 13: I think thats the word concrete written across his hand. If its not, I apologize Lil Wayne.
Step 14: Make some squiggley thingeys on his neck. Every rapper needs at least one squiggley thingey tattoo.
Step 15: I think those are dominoes on his left arm. His bodyguards would not let me shoot him with a tranquilizer dart, so I am not sure. Unless if you are a Lil Wayne historian, draw what you see or write your own subliminal message.

Remove a pencil from your pocket protector, because this video will give you step by step instruction on how to draw this glorious nerd.........Just pause the video at the end of each step and follow the instructions and I will show you how to crack the art geek algorithm.

Step 1: This is where nerds store their smarts. In this caricature, we are going to make the top of the head slightly larger in proportion to the bottom of the head. Take your time and draw these three shapes as accurately as possible.
Step 2: According to Charles Darwin, nerd eyes and ears have mutated over time to enhance the nerds senses for activities such as shopping at Radio Shack and watching Star Wars. The eyes and ears are very important to this caricature. Make the glasses and ears oversized, compared to the bottom of the face. Usually the ears will be as long as the length from the top of the eyes to the bottom of the nose, but we are ignoring that rule in this drawing and making them identical to the height of the glasses. Dont forget the eyebrow shapes above the glasses.
Step 3: Draw the nose shape and the wrinkle lines...... Then, complete the outline of the face. Make sure that you keep the bottom of the face smaller than the top.
Step 4: Draw a half circle for the mouth. Then add the details. Here is a close up.
Step 5: Add the lines to separate the teeth. For a realistic portrait, you dont want to go dark between each tooth....but.... For this caricature, it is ok.
Step 6: Draw in the braces. Please note that the braces are just small rectangles over each tooth, connected by wire.
Step 7: Draw in the eyes. Notice that they are close to the upper frames of the glasses. Try to draw exactly what you see here.
Step 8: Draw in the pattern for the hair. Dont stress, there is no way that you will get these lines perfect. Close enough is ok. I will show you a cool trick in the next part.

Think about it......If you give a child something to write with, they going to make images. Its an instinct, ingrained in every human being. As we get older we learn our letters and we suppress our visual instincts. Many people never attempt to reach their potential in drawing because they are scared of messing up or looking bad. You don't have to worry about messing up today......Tell em why Little Old Man!

As I was saying.....Today, YOU are going to Draw Katy Perry and you are going to surprise yourself with the quality of your work. I recommend that you hit the link in the video description. The link will take you to a page on my website with photos and text. This guide on my website will enhance your understanding of what I am teaching you in this video. Everybody grab your pencils and paper, lets get started.

Step 1: Draw a bowl shape.
Step 2: Observe and draw the nose shape at the top of the bowl shape. Notice its size and placement within the bowl shape. Also, add the lines which look like parentheses; notice their angle and their placement compared to the outside of the bowl shape.
Step 3: Add the three shapes to make the smile. Notice the placement of these shapes, compared to the nose and the smile lines. Be sure to notice that the upper lip is the smallest of the three shapes and the bottom lip is the biggest.
Step 4: Draw in the teeth. Notice that each tooth appears to become smaller as they go further back in the mouth. This is not the case in real life, but it is when we draw a smile. Try not to darken the lines between the teeth too much.
Step 5: Merrill? What the HECK is THAT? Relax! Don't worry!....Ill make this nice and simple. First, notice that the new shape is taller than the bowl shape. The triangular shape at the top center is slightly wider than the nose shape. Look closely and notice that the left side is squared and the right side is rounded. Also, be sure to see that the right side is lower than the left.
Step 6: Listen, youre a firework!!!! Don't freak out! This is EASY! Hair moves all the time. You do not need to get this shape perfectly. Use your observational skills to get the general shape of the hair. Again, don't be intimidated by this step.... just generalize what you see.
Step 7: Draw in the eye shapes. Notice that there is one eye length between the eyes. Notice the difference in size between the top eyelashes and the bottom ones. Notice the size of the iris compared to the whites of the eye.
Step 8: Draw in the shapes for her body.

This video is going to show you how to draw Megan Fox. It doesn't matter what your experience level is at drawing. All you have to do is follow the step by step instructions in this video. If you give it a try, you might transform your artistic skills.

Step 1.) Draw the rainbow shape and the wavy line below it.
Step 2.) Turn the rainbow shape in to an egg shape. Notice that the bottom part of the egg shape is bigger than the top. Add the two ellipses below the wavy line. Notice that the two elipses are slightly different from each other. The one on your right is more circular and the one on the left is more oval like.
Step 3.) Step 3 is the tricky step. Take some extra time to observe before you draw. Notice the placement and shape of the squiggly line for the nose. It is slightly lower than the half way point of the egg shape for the head. It is not as wide as the flattened M shape for the top lip. When you draw the top lip, be sure to observe that it is closer to the nose, than the chin.
Step 4.) Add the bottom lip and the space between the lips. Notice that I put a darker line below where the teeth will go. The bottom lip is similar to the width of the two shapes above it.
Step 5.) Just breathe! While this step looks difficult it is not urgent to perfectly get the shape of the hair. Remember,,,,,With the exception of the MTV show, Jersey Shore, hair is moving and never in a constant shape. Observe the hair in this image and draw it on your paper.
Step 6.) Add the eyes and eye brows. Notice that the eyebrows are at the top of the ellipses and the eyes fall in the center of the shapes. Notice that there is a double line over each eye. Also notice where the pupil and iris fall within the eye shape. Dont go too dark (yet) on the pupil and iris. She has green eyes. Dont go too dark (yet) on the pupil and iris. She has green eyes. is applied, the lashes stick together in a triangular shape. Her lashes are SUPER long. You can add that as a dark value right away. Dont go too dark (yet) on the pupil and iris. She has green eyes. When make up is applied, the lashes stick together in a triangular shape. The eyebrows can be shaded in as one tone (usually there is variation). The tone should be dark. Make sure that the bottom lashes are NOT as long as the top. With the mascara, her bottom lashes seem to be half the length of the top ones. This will seem wierd!.....But, the way that her head was turned, I only put in one nostril (with a hint of the second one......SOMEONE CALL STAR MAGAZINE! Megan Fox only has one nostril! Just kidding! :) Looks kind of scary now!....All drawings go through their arkward stages....at least mine do! Try to develop all parts of your drawing at the same pace The nose is tricky in this picture. There is a strong shadow on the right side of her face, but it is very complex. It is darkest 1.) in the nostril, 2.) followed by the bottom of the nose. 3.) The top of the nose by the right eye......It will take time to develop these tones. Notice how far back I hold my pencil.....I recommend that you try it! It works well for drawing and shading. When I need more control, I hold it closer to the tip. That brush is VERY soft tipped! I will use a bristle brush later.....and a blending stump. The bristle brush and the blending stump move the graphite more effectively, the soft tip brush gives a smoother blend. I use a HB pencil for most of the skin shading. I used a 4B for the lashes, eyes, nose, brows and the corner of the mouth. That is the 4B drawing pencil. That is the shadow created by her hair (overlapping her face), It is a very important shadow for this drawing to be believable. Corners of the mouth 4B..... lips HB. Shadow at the bottom of the bottom lip.....dont go too dark! Go light on the lines between the teeth. Hint at their existence....especially at the gum line. That is a 9B Graphite stick. It is extra wide to cover large areas. A graphite stick is the SAME THING as a pencil. The hair is very variable. I just recommend that you take the shape from this picture...but dont feel pressure to get it perfectly. Notice what I did on (her) right side....I drew in strong lines with the 9B graphite stick and then hatched (cross hatching) over it with a few lighter pencils (lighter as in 7B, 4B, HB). Step 1: I recommend that you cut your paper in to a square shape to begin. While this recommendation is not necessary, the edges of the square will help you judge the placement of the lines in your drawing.
Step 2: Draw the big U shape and the small P shape. Notice their relative size to each other and to the rest of the square shape. Notice where the lines of each letter end, compared to the edges of the paper. Finally, notice that the U and the P tilt to the right.
Step 3: Put in the triangle shape at the top....close to the middle of the page. Also put in the line in the upper left corner.
Step 4: This is a tough step.....Do not expect to get this perfectly. These are shadow shapes around the eye and they are not as important as getting the position of the eye correct. Notice the general placement of this shape. It lies above the tail of the P shape and more than 1/2 the way up the U shape. Sketch it in quickly. Do not agonize over it.
Step 5: Draw in the eyes. Overall, they are almond shaped and notice that there is one eye length between each eye. Also, be sure to add the double line around the eyes.
Step 6: Add the nose. There is a strong shadow on both sides of the bridge of the nose. There is even a stronger shadow at the bottom and the nostrils will be merged in to a shape that looks like a flattened M.
Step 7: Add the rainbow shape that you see. Notice its origin from the shape in step 6.
Step 8: Add Jay-Z's lips. The two lips together form a heart shape. The two lips are about equal in size to each other.
Step 9: Add the shirt and tie. Dont stress the placement of these shapes, they are irrelevant to the likeness.
Step 10: Finish the shirt and add his earring.
Step 11: Add the line below his chin.

Graffiti Characters Bombing the Boulevard daily. out the techniques that I use to make art. But, for once, I want to talk to you about choices that I made with my own art. The first medium that I was proficient in was oil painting. But after college ended, I was too drained to paint after I got home from a day of work. The setup and clean up of paints took as long as the process of painting and the drying time was way too slow for my needs. I estimate that I painted only once or twice per week for about three hours per day and I only produced about two finished paintings per year. I did this for six years.

I slowly started dabbling with mixed media art. What you are seeing now is a process that I have worked out over the past 2 years for the past two years. This process allows me to have results similar to oil paintings, done in one day rather than six months. I even incorporate oil paint in to one of the steps.

Here it is:
1.) Pencil Drawing
2.) Illustration Markers (prismacolor, Ad, Decocolor)
3.) Color Pencil
4.) Thin Layer of Oil Paint
5.) Digital Additions (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro)

I use this process to make my characters. Over the last 2 years I have made over 1500 characters. I scan them and save them as PNG files and I use them over and over in my artwork. PNG files stand for Portable Network Graphic and they are basically a filetype that works like a sticker. Stay tuned until the end of the video and I will show you what I mean. I used about five reference images for this work. I merged them (took my favorite parts of each and did this pencil drawing. The hand gesture was one of the best drawings that I did of a hand from my memory (head). This video is on time lapse, nut the pencil drawing part took the longest out of all the steps. Now I am using Illustration Markers (Prismacolor, Pantone, Ad Chartpak). The markers serve as the equivalent of an underpainting....they are fast, accurate and available in a variety of pre mixed colors and tones. The shirt will eventually be white, but I wanted the blue/green color to peek through the white when I add it in the next few steps. I am a HUGE fan of Prismacolor color pencils. They allow me to be accurate and to work with translucent color (meaning that light can only partially penetrate a layer of color pencil). Skin is translucent. Color pencils also blend (mix) very well with each other. Notice that I use several different, but similar (in tone and color) color pencils to do the arms and the shirt. Q: Why do paintings (most often) look more realistic than drawings?

Do you fake the funk on a nasty dunk? Little Old Man's "got game", but his skills are nothing compared to Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls (NBA- National Basketball Association), the man most responsible for keeping my Knicks without a title in the 1990's. It took me a long time to forgive MJ for that... but I think I have ...so I made a two video tutorial on how to draw him......Video 1 will give you step by step instruction on how to draw his head and video 2 will give you step by step instruction on how to draw his body. As always, hit the link in the video description to go to a printable step by step guide to help you draw and shade. Pause the video at the end of each step. Lets get started

Step 1: Draw an egg shape
Step 2: Put ears on the egg shape.... notice that the ear to your right is smaller than the ear to the left because his head is turned. Notice that their placement is on either side of the center of the egg.
Step 3: Add the two polygons that you see. Start each polygon at the top of the ear shape. Take some extra time to notice their shape and size. Then, just below the bottom of each ear, add a flat line, which we will later turn in to Michael Jordans nose. Finally, add a line for the mouth, one third of the way down, between the nose line and the chin line, at the bottom of the egg.
Step 4: Take a second to observe what happened to the nose line- I turned it in to three connected arcs. Notice the size and placement of the nostrils. Also add the sloping lines on either side of the nose
Step 5: Add the lines around the mouth. Notice that the top lip is M shaped and smaller than the bottom lip, which is shaped like an upside down rainbow. Also, observe and add Michael Jordan's moustache.
Step 6: Add the eyes and eyebrows. Take a second to notice their size and placement. The eyebrows are somewhat triangular, and lie on the inside corners of the polygons. The eyes are almond shaped and lie closer to the top, than the bottom of the polygon.
Step 7: Take some time to observe and add the lines for the shadows at the top of his head.
Step 8: Now observe and add the shadow lines on the bottom of the face.....He kind of looks like Darth Maul from Star Wars
Step 9: Add the lines for the ear on the left. If you wish, do the same for the ear on the right.

To shade I used a paint brush, graphite sticks, 3B, 6B and HB pencils, a blending stump (tortillion)....a q-tip can be substituted. I made this drawing on charcoal paper.

I used Prismacolor color pencils and Prismacolor markers (also Chartpak AD) markers and Pantone. (colored) This drawing took Two Hours but it is time lapsed in to one minute. If I succeeded with my artwork, I created, the Nerdiest Nerd in the world, the King of all Geeks, the Duke of Dorkhood, the Prince of Pocket Protectors....you get the point!
