Bridgman is a great artist to study from if you have some anatomy experience. It can be confusing if you’re not sure how to analyze his drawings. In this student critique for the triceps lesson, I talk about how to learn from Bridgman and apply the concepts to your drawings.

The most common mistake when drawing after Bridgman (I was guilty of this one), is copying his marks. Instead, look at what he’s trying to show you. His drawings are exaggerations of the form analogies he’s trying to communicate to his students. Bridgman is all about 3D form. He simplifies form better than anyone else. He shows us how the forms lock together and flow through the body. Even though he’s so heavy on structure, his drawings are super dynamic. Once you learn how to study Bridgman, his teaching becomes priceless.

There’s a few common mistakes I noticed with most of the triceps assignments you guys submitted. One of them was symmetry, which I’ll discuss in this video. I’ll talk about the other common mistakes in the premium version of this video - http://proko.com/anatomy

The arm is not symmetrical. We tend to force symmetry in most things we draw. This makes the drawings boring and the gesture stiff. The design of the triceps looks much more dynamic when looking for the asymmetries I talk about in this lesson. This includes the 3 muscle bellies and their large tendon.

Here's an example of an arm drawing to help you guys do the Forearms assignment. FIVE more examples at: http://proko.com/anatomy.

With nearly 20 muscles in the forearm, it can be tricky to draw especially when the arm is moving. Breaking them down into the 3 main groups helps make the forearm manageable to draw. In this assignment example I’ll simplify the muscles into three main groups: the flexors, the extensors, and the ridge muscles, while getting the gesture of the arm. Then I’ll break them up into the individual muscles and develop the forms with some shading.

If you haven't seen the anatomy lesson on the forearms, go check that out first. This is a demonstration of that lesson's assignment. Forearms are complicated, so it might help to know some basic info about forearms while watching this demo.
