Stan gets an email from a frustrated student and forwards it to Marshall. Marshall gets obsessed with it spending days and days pondering the issue! This leads to discussions on mastery, overcoming frustration, and how having a negative attitude hurts your progression. A listener makes the draftsmen choose between technical prowess or art that evokes emotion. Blackwing pencils definitely does not sponsor this episode, but hopefully will in the future ;)

Does copying from photo reference make you a fake artist? Is tracing considered cheating? Do you even have an art license?! We share our opinions about photobashing, tracing, and drawing from photos. We also discuss the debilitating effects of imposter syndrome and how it might sometimes be a good thing. Stan’s thang brings back childhood memories :)

This episode starts with a bang! Marshall adds onto last week’s episode about choosing *older* art parents. Stan talks about hyper-analyzing our schedule to identify blocks of time that we want to use differently. It’s amazing how much time can be created by using our time more efficiently. We can draw more every day if we know how to make time for it. Marshall discusses external structures and deadlines to force us to finish things and identifying the non-negotiables in our schedules. How do we balance personal life and work? A caller asks about selling art and joining a gallery.

Court uses John Goodman as an example to show how to draw heavy set body types in your caricatures. Get all 8 narrated demos in the premium course at http://proko.com/caricature

John Goodman is one of Court’s favorite actors and a great subject for caricaturing a heavy set body type. In this lesson, Court talks about how to proportion the torso and the head to get a good likeness on a heavy figure. He’ll also give you some pointers on drawing clothes.

In the premium course, Court shows how to caricature children, heavyset people, voluptuous women, doughy middle-aged men, elderly people, and Prokopenko people… http://proko.com/caricature

Learn about the anatomy of the glutes and some tips on drawing them. Make sure to Subscribe: http://bit.ly/SubProko

There are three major butt muscles you should know to draw good butts: the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and tensor fasciae latae. Fat also plays an important role in the appearance on the surface.

ASS-IGNMENT

Your assignment is to give Skelly a butt! I’ve included 3 photos of Skelly posed (http://proko.com/268), or you can use the skelly app (http://proko.com/skelly) to make any pose you’d like! Think about where each muscle originates and inserts. You can keep the lower leg as a simple cylinder, or a bloated cylinder. Think about how the forms of the butt muscles are distorted by the pose.

PREMIUM

Learn more about butts at http://proko.com/anatomy

The premium anatomy course includes drawing butt variations and more about each of the three muscles.

Ever try painting like a sculptor or drawing like a painter? This may sound unintuitive, but thinking in large blocks of shape and tone will help you develop the forms to look more real and natural. Subscribe to Proko: http://bit.ly/SubProko

In this critique, we will watch one of our student's digital process videos and review where they can improve in their work. Court will show you his technique for developing a quick digital caricature portrait and talk about how to think when painting to make an appealing image.

Aaron Blaise is a former Disney animator and professional artist who’s a true master when it comes to drawing and painting animals. In this Masterpiece Demo you’ll get the opportunity to shadow him in his own studio and watch him draw a large charcoal masterpiece from scratch. Starting with his process of selecting a photo and then moving onto sketching the rough layin, and then further refining and rendering of the anatomy. You’ll also see every material and tool used in the video, as well as a brief big cat and comparative anatomy lesson. We tried to capture how Aaron draws when nobody is looking rather than how he draws for a demonstration. The true way he creates in his studio. A must have for those wanting to see the entire process and workflow of a professional illustrator - https://proko.com/blaise
