What's going on everybody, welcome back to the Art Shack! This time I have a drawing tutorial on how to draw realistic crashing waves in the ocean. The beach and ocean has always been a big part of my life so I had a great time sharing this experience with all of you.

I started this drawing by using a photo reference to get down the general wave shape and the basic shading of the sky. Once I had this basic detail down, I put the photo away and just took it from there. I always like to do some or most of the drawing from imagination or memory. It helps to add some uniqueness to it as well as my own style.

When I start a new landscape, I will usually sketch out the basic shapes of everything I want to see in a drawing and once that is done, I will usually go in for the sky.

This time I made a lighter sky which I eventually went back into and made darker. I kept it simple. I pretty much shaded the whole thing in and then erased out some clouds. I didn't want to make a detailed cloudy sky because I did not want the clouds to be a major element to this drawing. I decided to have them less detailed than what I would usually do.

When starting the wave, I had an idea of how it was going to look. I knew that there was a part of the wave that was crashing over and mapped that portion out. I also left that area untouched as I was shading in the rest of the wave.

I started the wave with a light pencil. I shaded it in with an HB pencil quite a few times then blending it out. I did this process over and over until I got the wave dark enough. I wanted the large wave to be considerably darker than the sky so that the white foam and mist of the wave would really show up. When adding in details for the wave, I made sure to follow the flow and direction of the wave. Doing this helps to define the movement and shape of the wave. Making lines in a different direction would have taken away from this effect. I went in as dark as a 4B pencil and used that to add in the final detailed line work.

For the mist and foam of the wave. I used the dirty blending stump and went back in with that. I rubbed the excess graphite from that onto the foam section of the wave. I then used an eraser and erased in a motion flowing backwards making the wind look like it was hitting the wave straight on. This helps to create the perfect wave for surfers. I used a few tools to erase out the waves. One was a large white eraser. I also used a mechanical eraser. The final piece that I used was an electric eraser to really get up the darker portions to make them highlights.

Once the main wave was done. the only portion left was the smaller wave that I added in. It took the same steps as the first wave except on a smaller scale.

Welcome to how to draw trees with leaves part 2.

This drawing builds off the last tutorial on how to draw a dead tree and shows how to add leaves to a tree. The approach to this drawing is much different than the last tutorial but It will help to watch that drawing before this tutorial. It will help with the anatomy of the tree and just the basic shapes.

I start off the tutorial by creating a ground to plant the tree into the ground so that it is not floating in the air. The tree is going to resemble that of a lollipop tree but after adding detail to it, it will take on a very realistic look of a tree.

For the trunk of the tree, I like to avoid in making a perfectly vertical trunk shape. Instead, I like to put it on the side or draw it on an angle to give it some more character and it separates it from other trees because it looks unique.

After the stump is in place, draw a basic light outline of what you would like the tree shape to look like. You can go as crazy as you would like with this. After the outline is completed, Use the underhand grip to hold the pencil at an angle and work the pencil in very quick circular motions. This will be the motion that you need to draw most of the tree.

I like to start out at the bottom of the tree. I start to shade it in with a 4H pencil. This pencil is very light and no matter how hard you press, it is always going to be light on the page. I use this to add some texture to the whole entire tree. This is the most time consuming part of this drawing. It took me about a half hour to do this part.

You want to start at the bottom and work your way up. Also, shading areas in groups help to give the tree a more real to life look.

After starting to shade I realize that I need to establish a light source. Deciding where this is in the beginning of the drawing is the best way to do it. Adding a light source helps to give your piece a 3 dimensional look and more realistic.

With the light source added in, The bottom right of the tree will be very dark while the top right of the tree will very light. I have also put in a center dividing line down the tree. Anything to the right of that line will be significantly darker than anything on the left of that line.

Before I made this last part, I spent a lot of time just looking over the entire drawing seeing what needed to be added. After spending the time and asking some others. I came to the conclusion that everything looked great except for the background. It got lost in all the foreground details so I wanted to go back in and make it more pronounced to help it stand out.

In doing this, I used a light pencil for the very background mountains. I wanted to make them the lightest and have each mountain closer get darker and darker. So going through the pencils I did exactly that. I wasn't too worried about the detail or texture for these mountains because they are quite far away. So after playing around with different tones and slight texture, I arrived to a point which looked nice. Which is where I will leave off this drawing.

Hey there everyone! Welcome to my video where I show you how to draw a city on some mountains. I had a great time with this one.

This drawing started with just a simple idea that I had. I wanted to draw a mountain with some sort of observation outpost on the top of it. Or some sort of communications center of some sort. And from that Idea, I started to create the side of the mountain and as I was doing that, I wanted to include some large skyscrapers in it just to see how it would turn out.

That is normally something you would not see within a sketch so I was really just curious to see how it would turn out. I am happy to say that I really did enjoy the way that it turned out in the end.

What I really do enjoy about sketching is coming up with the overall composition. When that is completed, you can really get a sense for how the image is going to turn out. And creating the composition is really the best part about it. The creativity is only limited by what you can come up with. It really makes you think outside the box and makes you much more creative with your ideas.

You will also find that as you create your scenes, objects will often change shape along the way to better fit within the overall composition. One Idea you had for the very beginning of an image might change completely when you get to the end of that same drawing or sketch.

In this second video I decided to do an all around basic shading so that you can begin to understand the lighting element and how things will look more towards the completion of the drawing. What you will really need for this video is a blending stump. A Q-tip will also work. The process of blending helps to take away some of the outlines of the drawing which will take it beyond the drawing looking like a sketch.
