Василий Макарович Шукшин родился 25 июля 1929 года в селе Сростки Алтайского края в семье крестьян-единоличников или «середняков», Василий рано потерял отца: в эпоху коллективизации и репрессий 30-х годов Макар Леонтьевич Шукшин был арестован и расстрелян. Но не смотря на это в душе маленького Василия Шукшина не поселилась ненависть к советской власти.
Заботу о семье взяла на себя его мама, позже вышедшая замуж второй раз. Отчим заботился о семье и хорошо относился к детям. Позже Василий Шукшин будет с теплотой вспоминать своего отчима как человека большой доброты.
