Scott Flanders, an artist from Riot Games, came to the Proko studio to film a series on how he develops ideas. In this first part of the series he creates digital graphic poster of Swamp Thing! He’ll take you through his process starting with simple greyscale silhouettes in photoshop and then carving them into a more complex colored piece. In the remainder of this series, he’ll develop his concepts further with a sculpture and oil painting.

When we study anatomy, we’re focused so much on structure, we tend to forget about gesture. I’ll show you how to hit that balance and draw dynamic anatomy. Get more critiques at http://proko.com/anatomy

One thing I’ve noticed the longer I’ve been teaching anatomy, is how some of you are sacrificing the fluidity of your drawings so you can get the technical parts of the muscle right. Learning anatomy is tough and one of the traps some artists fall into is focusing too much on form and not enough on gesture. This will make your drawings stiff. In this critique video I’ll show you the importance of gesture and how to keep your anatomy studies dynamic.

She’ll show you everything you’ll need to get started, including how she makes her own tools. She’ll guide you through the entire process of sculpting a portrait from life, starting with the wire armature, then building up clay to get the large forms, and taking it to a finish with the details.

A pitfall to avoid in digital painting is sampling too much color from a photo. This caricature critique of Michael Keaton examines why it’s important to study color and examines some structural issues with the drawing. More at http://proko.com/caricature

This student critique builds upon the previous lesson on using checklists to caricature a subject. For this lesson, the critique is broken up into two parts. The first goes over the dangers of sampling colors from photos to replicate a subject. The second goes over the abstraction process and fixing some of the structural errors of a caricature using a checklist. This is only a small part of critiques for the caricature course.
