THE QUESTION: Is an EMO still an EMO if he loses his hair?...........Script from video: For those of you who dont know.....EMO's are the dudes known for their melancholy dress code, morbid body language, sad facial expressions and their taste in music.....but most of all, EMO's are famous for their super floppy, vision impairing hair! Oh look! Heres a fine specimen!....This leads us to a question that perplexes the universe.....Is an EMO still an EMO if he loses his hair? I want to hear your opinion......Post your answers to this question as a text comment or a video response, to enter yourself in this contest. All responses will be judged on humor and originality. Please don't post anything offensive because we want to make EMO's smile, not cry! The prize is an illustration of the winner be me, Merrill Kazanjian. As always I will document the process on video and give you a copy for your channel. The Dark Ages (Middle Ages, Medieval Times) is my favorite period in art history. Monks did most of the artwork and kept literacy alive. The Roman infrastructure broke down after Constantine the Great (Constantine II) moved the capital to Byzantium (later Constantinople). Roads crumbled, barbarians sacked....people stayed still.....Latin broke down in to English, French, Spanish Italian, Romanian and Catalan. The artwork was called "gothic" by later art historians (which was an insulting term).

Phase 1: I began this oil portrait with a pencil sketch on drawing paper. This is very unorthodox (when compared to painting techniques of the past) because oil portraits are usually done on canvas or wood panel and any sketching is done with vine charcoal. Paint becomes more transparent in time and pencils lines will eventually be seen through a painting as it ages. The vine charcoal will blend with oil paint but pencil will not. I have a very creative fix to this problem (as you will see in the coming steps).
Phase 2: The second step of a traditional painting is usually an underpainting with brown paint (usually burnt sienna). Underpaintings give painters an opportunity to build masses with paint (turn thin lines from drawing instruments in to blocks of tone, with the help of a paint brush). Underpaintings also allow artists to build tones. I use gray illustration markers rather than oil paint, because of the speed in which I can apply it (no mixing / superior drying time) I recommend the Warm and Cool Grays Marker Set listed below if you wish to try my technique.Chartpak Ad Marker Set: Warm and Cool Grays- Set of 25 A single nib with three distinct line weights. These waterproof, permanent, solvent-based markers deliver brilliant, sparkling color in fine point, medium weight, or broad strokes, with just a shift of the wrist. From crisply articulated tight comps to broadly expressive illustrations, one marker gives you all the lines you need. Phase 3: To build skin tones, I used flesh tone Chartpak AD Illustration Markers. These markers can create wonderful works of art when used alone, but I used them as a quick means to color my drawing (soon to be painting). Flesh tone Markers Flesh Tone and Gray Markers Pantone Prismacolor Ad Chartpak. Phase 4: Next, I added a layer of Prismacolor Color Pencils. Prismas are translucent and very mixable. The fine point of the color pencil helped me get great details for the features of the face (fine tipped paint brushes ALWAYS RUN OUT OF PAINT!!!!)Phase 5: Scan. Here is where things get interesting! I scanned my drawing to edit on my computer (clean it up). Below is the updated version of the scanner I used. I have gotten a lot of mileage out of it and I love it!HP Designjet 510 24" Printer Fast printing: up to 3.5 min/page color A1/D size on coated media, 55 sec/page line drawings Prints HP-GL/2 and PLT files with click of a button Ideal for in-house printing of high-quality CAD drawings. Phase 7: Now it is time for some painting!!!! I used the oil paint colors Ultramarine Blue, Venetian Red, Titanium White, Flake White, Transparent Earth Orange, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Gold Ochre, Olive Green, Raw Siena, Lamp Black, Asphaltum, Caucasian Flesh Tone, and Alizarin Crimson Permanent. I started with the highlight areas I mixed a lot of Flake White in to the areas on the cheek (with the other colors. The ears and the lips recieved a lot of Cad. Red and Alizarin Crimson mixed with olive green and Tit. White and Lamp Black, Phase 7: (continued) The shadow areas were glazed (click on the image below to go to a video on how to glaze) Glazing is adding multiple layers of transparent paint atop opaque paint (see video).Accents on the Figure Set

He averages 26 points 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal per game. NO! NOT this guy......THIS GUY! Mr. Amare Stoudemire....also known as Stat. The New York Knicks and I are holding a contest to celebrate Stat's achievement of being chosen as a starter in the NBA all star game.
Your challenge is to create an artwork that celebrates Amare Stoudemire's contributions to the New York Knicks. Unlike last time.......I am not judging the winner. The winner will be chosen by a member of the New York Knicks organization. I am very happy about this since it was such a difficult decision last time. But, to give you a heads up, the judge is looking for creativity and skill, but in order to win, the challenge question must be answered.
In order to help you make a great work of art, I made these three videos to help you. You do not have to use them, you can feel free to be as creative as you want to be, but these videos are here to help you if you need them.
Now lets get to the fun part.....The Grand Prize.....or should I say, prizes. Prize number 1 is identical to last time....an oil portrait of you....done by me. I will document the process on video and send you the finished work......But theres one more BIG prize this time......The winner will also be featured on Knicks.com and Knicksnow.com.....two sites that have thousands of visitors each day! Its an opportunity for you and your art work to gain a lot of exposure.

Grab your pencils and paper because YOU are going to draw Amare Stoudemire, All Star Forward of the New York Knicks.,,,,,Whats that you say? Drawing Amare looks difficult? Well that's just silly talk. I don't care if you've never picked up a pencil before! Im gonna be your point guard and I will assist you by making this difficult task as easy as possible. For example, hit the link in the video description and you will be taken to a webpage with photos and text to accompany this video. In other words, this isnt a half court shot, this is a slam dunk. So if you want to learn to draw, dont get left behind like Steve Nash.....grab your pencil and lets begin.
Step 1: Draw the shape for the jersey. It is about three times as tall as it is wide. Leave enough room on the top for the head and the bottom for the legs.
Step 2: Draw in the three shapes that you see. The first is similar to a banana and the second and third are circular. Notice their placement compared to the jersey shape.
Step 3: Add in the arms.....Wait! Dont freak out! This step is easy if you see the 2 trapezoid shapes in between the arms and torso.
Step 4: Add Amar'e's basketball shorts and his legs. Together they are similar in height to his basketball jersey.
Step 5: Add the shape for the neck.
Step 6: Sculpt the hands out of the shapes from step 2. Use the original shape as your guide.
Step 7: Add the folds and the star to his shorts. These do not have to be perfect.
Step 8: Add the star and the upside down house shape to his jersey. Ignore the head for now. I will give you a close up and detailed instructions on that in a minute.
Step 9: Use the nagative space to sculpt out the letters E.A.S.T. in the upside down house shape.
Step 10: Add the number one below the star and the word "the" above the word East. Also darken the collar and add the shapes for the folds on the shoulders of the jersey,
Step 11: Add the four shapes for Amare's mouth and facial hair. We will add more shapes to this in the next step. For this step, it is helpful to notice the diamond shape around the mouth.
Step 12: Add the line that I just added to form the top lip, below the moustache.
Step 13 is the trickiest step. There are 7 teeth visable. The two front teeth in the center. Three to your left and two to your right. One is blocked in shadow. Notice that there is more space below the teeth than above the teeth. Draw what you see.
Step 14: Add the nose shape. Notice where it lines up to the smile lines from the previous step. It is ok to shade the nostrils very dark because they will be in shadow.
Step 15: Extend the head and draw in the shape for the eyes.
Step 16: Add the ears. Notice that the bottom of the ear shapes line up with the bottom of the nose.
Step 17: Add the hair.
Step 18: Add the eyebrows.
Step 19: Add the shape for the eyes.
Step 20: Shade the eyes. Notice that the lines get thicker as they move towards the ears. Leave a small space in each eye for a highlight.

This video is going to give you step by step instruction on how to draw an Occupy Wall Street protestor. All you will need is a pencil, some paper, a global recession and some corporate anger and you'll be able to draw this handsome fellow. Pause the video at the end of each step. Lets begin.

Step 1: Draw a rectangle for a sign.
Step 2: Draw a trapezoid shape above the sign
Step 3: Draw these shapes inside the trapezoid shape.
Step 4: Draw the arch shape for the pants. Be sure to make the pants really tight. Protesting in baggy clothing was so last year.
Step 5: Now I am going to challenge you a little. Draw this crown shape for the beard above the trapezoid shape. Also, be sure to notice the placement for the oval.
Step 6: Draw the upside down rainbow shape for the bottom lip.
Step 7: It was learned in a recent Quinnipiac poll that 94% of Occupy Wall Street protestors wear artsy Buddy Holly glasses. It is our job as artists to observe the world around us so add the nose and the glasses.
Step 8: Having Bieber Hair is the new comb over. Add the shape for the hair.
Step 9: Add the eyes. If you want to make someone look angry, leave some space between the Iris and the upper eye lid.
Step 10: Add these hot dog shapes for the fingers.
