You stare at your father for just a moment, trying to convey how hungry you are in your stare. Finally, he tells you in Vietnamese, "Oh go ahead! Eat breakfast!" Yes, last time, she thought she was so smart because she knew the Vietnamese names for so many insects in your garden. But she is only five years old, and you are pretty sure that you have her this time! You have a bug day planned -- of gardening again. She loves it, and it is an excellent chance for you to show off your new Vietnamese insect vocabulary that you have been practicing. As you follow her out into the flower garden, she looks back at you with those big patronizingly sweet eyes and says in Vietnamese, "Look, what is this bug called?" Oh, she's fast: she thinks you don't know this answer. You kneel down next to her, sneer on your face, and reply sweetly in Vietnamese, "Honey, that is a spider, and it looks like it's protecting itself from you." Astonished, she whips her head around to face you and replies with a simple, "Oh." You point to another bug nearby and explain in Vietnamese, "And look here, the cicadas are climbing up the tree." She stares at you in disbelief and replies in Vietnamese, "I don't want to look at bugs any more, let's go work in the garden!" As you get closer, you see a Vietnamese storeowner and a teenage boy screaming loudly at each other! The storeowner is very angry and throws his arms around in fury. You look around you for answers from the crowd...no one is helping in any way. Crying, the teenager sits at a nearby bench, moping. But the storeowner follows him and starts pushing him, yelling more loudly! You don't know what to do...but you feel you should do something. Pulling out your cell phone, you call the Vietnamese police station -- they can handle it. The dispatcher on the other end asks you in Vietnamese, "I know you dislike what you hear, but please describe the scene for me so I can tell the police." You explain in Vietnamese, "There is a teenage boy, crying and moping. I see a very angry storeowner, yelling and complaining. And there is a scared woman running away, clutching her child to protect him." Within minutes, the police arrive and have the situation under control.
