Using cross contour lines to show the form of a muscle is a great way to study anatomy. But many newer students draw arbitrary curves without understanding the form they’re representing. I’ll use this biceps critique to show you my approach to solving cross contour. More student critiques at http://proko.com/anatomy
When you’re drawing forms and cross contour, analyze if the form is going toward you or away from you. In some of these anatomy studies, I noticed attempts at cross contour with curvy lines without consideration of their direction and height. Also, the large simple form should be visible even when drawing the cross contour of the smaller parts. I’ll show you how to start with the cross contour of the primary form and then divide it into the secondary forms.

It’s a really good program for high school students. Basically what they do is find about 100 or so really talented artists in high school and they fly them out to Miami for a week for an amazing artistic experience. It goes beyond just this one week. Once you’re an alumni, you’re part of the group. They try to nurture these artists and help them out as they’re transitioning to become professional artists. They connect the students to mentors who are well known in the field. Many win money to fund their artwork.

I noticed a lot of students are attempting to shade their anatomy studies, but are making some similar mistakes. If not done correctly, shaded drawings can look flatter than linear drawings. In this critique I’ll give you 3 tips that can easily improve your shading.

Drawing from memory. It sounds pretty hard, like something only a few naturally gifted artists could do, right? Actually, drawing from memory is something every artist does already. Technically you can only draw from memory. Challenge your memory by observing the reference for only 30, 15, and 3 seconds. Put the reference away and draw!

I hear those sleigh bells ringing.. It’s the first day of the 12 Days of Proko! Today I’m painting Santa Claus using gouache paint. I’ll give you advice on using the medium and take you through the whole process, from photoshoot, to thumbnail sketches, color comps and final painting. It’s a really good program for high school students. Basically what they do is find about 100 or so really talented artists in high school and they fly them out to Miami for a week for an amazing artistic experience. It goes beyond just this one week. Once you’re an alumni, you’re part of the group. They try to nurture these artists and help them out as they’re transitioning to become professional artists. They connect the students to mentors who are well known in the field. Many win money to fund their artwork.
