I’ve poured all my experience into this hand lesson series. I’ll teach you hands in 4 parts… Part 1 explained the muscles of the hand and how to draw them. Part 2 taught you all the surface details, like fingernails, skin folds, and fat pads. For this lesson, Part 3, I’ll show you a process for drawing hands from reference or from your imagination. It’s all based on the previous lessons and will help you with inventing detailed dynamic hands. Part 4 is a treat: there’s 6 drawing demos, teaching you how to draw everything from relaxed poses to clenched fists. I even talk about foreshortening! I hear those sleigh bells ringing.. It’s the first day of the 12 Days of Proko! Today I’m painting Santa Claus using gouache paint. I’ll give you advice on using the medium and take you through the whole process, from photoshoot, to thumbnail sketches, color comps and final painting. Disney animator, Aaron Blaise, was kind enough to be my Santa model!

It’s a really good program for high school students. Basically what they do is find about 100 or so really talented artists in high school and they fly them out to Miami for a week for an amazing artistic experience. It goes beyond just this one week. Once you’re an alumni, you’re part of the group. They try to nurture these artists and help them out as they’re transitioning to become professional artists. They connect the students to mentors who are well known in the field. Many win money to fund their artwork.

Drawing from memory. It sounds pretty hard, like something only a few naturally gifted artists could do, right? Actually, drawing from memory is something every artist does already. Technically you can only draw from memory. Challenge your memory by observing the reference for only 30, 15, and 3 seconds. Put the reference away and draw!
