He averages 26 points 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal per game. NO! NOT this guy......THIS GUY! Mr. Amare Stoudemire....also known as Stat. The New York Knicks and I are holding a contest to celebrate Stat's achievement of being chosen as a starter in the NBA all star game.

Your challenge is to create an artwork that celebrates Amare Stoudemire's contributions to the New York Knicks. Unlike last time.......I am not judging the winner. The winner will be chosen by a member of the New York Knicks organization. I am very happy about this since it was such a difficult decision last time. But, to give you a heads up, the judge is looking for creativity and skill, but in order to win, the challenge question must be answered.

In order to help you make a great work of art, I made these three videos to help you. You do not have to use them, you can feel free to be as creative as you want to be, but these videos are here to help you if you need them.

Now lets get to the fun part.....The Grand Prize.....or should I say, prizes. Prize number 1 is identical to last time....an oil portrait of you....done by me. I will document the process on video and send you the finished work......But theres one more BIG prize this time......The winner will also be featured on Knicks.com and Knicksnow.com.....two sites that have thousands of visitors each day! Its an opportunity for you and your art work to gain a lot of exposure.

Now for the rules. Be sure to follow each of these rules carefully in order to enter the contest. Rule 1: All competitors must be subscribers to my youtube channel and should also register with knicksnow.com.

Rule 2: Write the words, "Im in" in the comments area below this video.
Rule 3: Post your entries as a video response to this video or to my Facebook "like page". Just hit the box on my channel page to get there.

Finally a friendly reminder that any artistic medium is ok for this contest..........The deadline for entries is March 10th. Good luck, and even though I am not judging, I look forward to seeing your entries and I will comment on each one.

This video is a stop motion animation of me drawing / sculpting / assembling Homer J. Simpson with various beans, chocolate chips and sunflower seeds. It took me about two hours to create this and it is all fit in less than two minutes in this video. I have been watching the show since I have been in middle school; so this is my tribute. Marge Ned Flanders, Lisa, Maggie, Bart, Moe, Apu, Groundskeeper Willie, Principal Skinner, Chief Wiggum, Nelson, Millhouse (Milhaus?), Barney, Mr. Burns and Mr. Smithers to come? To draw the head from any angle you must first understand its basic structure. Look past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This ability to simplify can be applied to the features of the face, but when starting the drawing you could look even further. Ignore even the features and simplify to the most basic form of the head. I use a method taught by Andrew Loomis in his book, "Drawing the Head & Hands".
The head deconstructed into its basic forms, is a sphere as the cranium and a block as the jaw and cheek bones.A Sphere as the Cranium
The sides of the head are flat, so we can slice off a piece from both sides of the ball. From profile, this plane will be a perfect circle, but when drawing it from any other angle, it will appear to be an oval because of perspective. Divide this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the beginning of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the brow line. The top and bottom of the oval help you find the hair line and the bottom of the nose.A Block as the Jaw and Cheek Bones
Attach the shape of the jaw. The top will start at the brow line and the back will start at the center of the oval. This is a 3-D volume with a front plane, side planes, and bottom plane (bottom plane is seen from some angles).

0:27- Notice that I am using a mechanical pencil. It has thinner graphite and it helps me create subtle tones for the features of the face. 0:27 Bruno Mars has dark brown eyes. BUT, do not be tempted to go too dark right away, try to build slowly.0:30 The pupil of the eye is darker in tone than the iris. Notice that I left a small white space for a reflection in each eye. this is key to creating a realistic looking eye

0:35 If you havent done so already, erase the line from the top of the bowl shape that goes across the bottom of the nose.1:00- Notice that the C shaped shadow going from the eyebrow to the bottom of the nose has a WIDE VARIETY in tones. Press harder and use high number B pencils (4B, 6B, 8B) to create darker tones.1:18 Watch how I use the paper stump to start the shadow to your left. I "cross hatch" some lines, and then I spread the lines (graphite) with the stump. If you do not have a paper stump, use a Q-Tip.1:44- A singnificant marker on Bruno's face is the deep fold between the mouth and nose. To truly get his likeness, you will need to get that.2:03 - "Float like a butterfly and shade like a bee"....In other words, move around. Do not get stuck in one place. Develop your drawing evenly.2:24 The background on the right side of his face (your left) will eventually be as dark as the shirt tone that I just added.2:55- The paper below my hand is called a slip sheet. It allows me to rest my hand on the drawing without smudging it.3:18- Do NOT make the same MISTAKE I made. I RUSHED the background instead of hatching it in SLOWLY.3:50- At this point of the drawing and shading process, your goal should be to eliminate "lines" and notice the nuances of "edges". In other words, some shapes have solid edges, while others have softer edges. There is often a tonal difference as well.

3:50- Watch how I use the blending (paper) stump to soften an edge......Suggestion: Look in the mirror (right now) and notice the tonal and physical (hardness softness) differences of your face.4:27- The highlights and shadows on the right side of his face (your left) are very complex but important. Notice the darkness that goes down his cheek and the four highlights. 5:09 Watch me shade the left side of his face (your right side). It is very tricky. the dark values are very hidden.....but they are still there.5:48- The nose is tricky. The darkest part is the nostril. The entire shape of the bottom of the nose stays pretty light because the light source seems to be shining up from his left.
6:28- The darkest part of the mouth is the two corners.
6:52- My biggest mistake was going TOO FAST with shading the backgound. When you press hard it causes a crease/indentation in the page. When the paper gets damaged, your shading will be uneven. Youll see what I mean. 7:29- Rewind to 7:24 to see how I use the pencil and brush to blend two DIFFERENT TONED shadows together. 8:14- At this point of the drawing, I am going to use the high number B pencils to get the dark values in. I am also going to use the kneaded eraser to create highlights. 9:18- If you have any lines left (such as the one on the hat) get them out of your drawing. Look around at the world. It is expressed in shapes or masses, not lines. The most difficult part of pencil drawing ls realizing that you are working with a fine tip, capable of making only lines.

http://merrillk.com/index.php?part=fineart&articles_id=5337&collection=114 This is a continuation of my series on how to draw facial expressions with drawing pencils. Today, We are going to concentrate on the expressions of shock and fear. I video taped the creation of 14 sketches, to give you a lot of chances to learn. You will see profile, 3/4 and frontal views and both male and female faces. But, before we begin, take a second to glance at the major differences. This information will be discussed in the video and you can download on my website Merrillk.com. Just type the words shock and fear in the search box to download this resource. Or, if you are watching on my youtube channel, hit the link to the right to view this resource. I hope that you learn a lot. Here we go.

Character 1- In the first character, I want to highlight the gaping mouth. Notice that the top teeth are exposed. When you draw this expression, the top lip is pulled up, which shortens the distance between the lip and the nose

Character 2- For this character, I want to highlight that the eyebrows usually separate and the forehead flattens for this expression. This is the opposite of the expression of anger where the eyebrows are pulled closer to each other.

Character 3- For this sketch I want you to notice the separation of the iris from the bottom eyelid as well as the perfect C shape that the mouth is in when it is in profile.

Character 4- For this character, take note of the separation between the iris and the top eyelid and the amount of space between the eyebrows- Both very common in a fearful expression.

Character 5- For this character, I want to highlight the lines on either side of the nose. For this expression you can make these lines more visible.

Character 6- This character has his eyes shut tight and his mouth open wider than any other character in the picture. To draw a scream, make the area between the eyelids as dark as the lashes and darken the area around the eye. Make the mouth extra wide.

Character 7- This character seems more startled than scared because her mouth is less open and there is relatively little shading around the eye.

Character 8- In this character, I wish that I left the mouth in the classic C shape for drawing this expression in profile view.

Character 9- Notice the dark rings under the eyes of this character. That and the separation between the iris and the upper eyelid makes him look distraught. Also notice that the mouth doesn't always have to be gaped open to convey fear. Instead, I filled the gap with teeth.

Character 10- This character has a lot of facial commonalities with the other characters that have been drawn so far. I added a still pose with a pointing finger to supplement the facial expression.

Character 11- A very common pose to convey shock and fear is to place both hands on either side of the face- Also known as the OMG pose.

Character 12- Notice that this character has separation on both sides of her iris. A great way to make someone look terrified.

Character 13- Since this character wears glasses, I made each eye seem magnified. I wish that I added a separation between the iris and the eyelid.

Character 14- I should have stopped at 13!. I made his head too small for his position in the picture. I know this because the people in the row behind him were significantly bigger- a mistake in perspective drawing.

So. you wish to draw Bruce Lee do you?

Hahahahahaha

Oh you are serious?

Well then?

You must Enter the Dragon with me

I will train you to be deadly with a pencil. This video will teach you how to draw Bruce Lee's Head. Video two will teach you how to draw Bruce Lee's body.

Simply follow my step by step instructions and eat fish heads twice per day and you will have no problems with your drawing.

If you do not like fish heads, I recommend that you hit the link in the video description. You will be taken to a resource with words and pictures. Simply download and print and you will not need the protein content of the fish heads.

One more thing before your training begins. It would be prudent for you to click on Little Old Pai Mei and his Pikachu friend so that you can subscribe to this channel. Because, you will never be able to spell it again!

I will act normal again in three seconds.......

Step 1: Observe then draw the shape that you see. The bottom is a semi circle
and the top is trapezoidal.
Step 2.) Add the two shapes that you see. They will be the area around Bruce
Lee's eyes.
Step 3: Add the shapes which will make up Bruce Lee's nose. Be sure to notice that
the size of these shapes when together is slightly smaller than the eye shapes
from the previous step.

Step 4: Step four is the most complicated step. Be sure to observe it for a few
seconds before you draw it. Notice that the trapezoidal mouth shape is as wide as
the nose shape above. The shadow shape encircles the mouth and then forms a
shape that slightly resembles the State of California to the right of the mouth.
Step 5: Put in the lines which will separate the eyebrows and the area above Bruce
Lee's eyes.
Step 6: Is tricky. Be sure to give it extra time. Add the eyes and be sure to notice
that they lie directly in the middle of the shapes added in step two. Bruce will have
an angry expression in this picture so his eyes will be wide open and his eyebrows
will be pushing downwards.
Step 7: Add Bruce Lee's vintage 70's Emo haircut.
Step 8: Add the two shapes for his neck.

This video will teach you how to draw NBA superstar, Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder (formerly Seattle Supersonics).

Narration: That was me before I became a serious artist ..... While my jumping skills have regressed, my video making skills have improved. You dont need to tilt your head to the left anymore. Now that you have seen my very mediocre Sportscenter highlight, I am going to teach you about highlighting and shading in a drawing video. This video will teach you how to draw the top player on team USA, Mr. Kevin Durant. All you have to do is follow the step by step instructions and pause the video at the end of each step while you draw. Im going to make it easy, so I hope that you give it a try. Lets get started.

Step one- Observe, then draw the two shapes that you see. The top shape is similar to a crescent moon. The bottom shape is trapezoidal and the base of the bottom shape is similar to a childs drawing of a bird in flight.

Step two- Add the four oval shapes for the eyes and ears. Be sure to notice that the left ear is much thinner because the head is turned.

Step three- The double shape that I just added is the edge of the bottom of the nose and a parallel line for a shadow. Be sure to notice the symmetrical smile lines on both sides of the nose as well. Here is a close up.

Step four is a tricky step. Start with completing the oval for the chin. Next, create the symmetrical lines for the moustache. Durant also has sparse facial hair below his bottom lip and at his chin.

Step five is the most difficult step. I added the mouth and I will give you a close up in a second. Notice the shape of the teeth and the shadow below the teeth. Take some extra time to observe the teeth are slightly taller than the shadow below. Also, notice that the top lip gets darker as it turns towards the teeth.

Step six- add the eyebrows to the top of the oval shapes from step one and the eyes towards the bottom. Also, observe and add the details to the ears.

Step seven. add the jersey.

Hey Everybody its Merrill. Today we are going to do something different. I made this video for my viewers who feel that they have graduated from my step by step videos and need another challenge. As usual we will be using paper and pencil and a blending tool of some sort. In other words a blending stump....and or a paintbrush. If you dont have either of those use a q tip. Now for the first time, I am going to give you some required viewing. A while back I made a very good human proportion tutorial and knowing human proportion will help you while doing this drawing. If you wish, hit the link in the video description to download this image to print so that you have a paper reference image while you draw. The image will also be posted on the screen.

Your first job is to see two shapes. The figure and the background. I want you to lightly scribble in the general shape of the figure. Start to notice the relationship between the head and the hips. The head is almost directly over her left leg and her hip is sticking out to the right. Notice the width of the arms compared to the torso. Notice where the finger tips end. It might be helpful to know that when our arms are fully extended to the side like when we give somebody a hug, the measurement from fingertip to fingertip is very close to our height. Be sure to notice the shape made by the negative space under her left arm.

Once you get the general shape of the figure sketched in, you can start breaking the figure down in to smaller shapes. Notice that I am not just outlining the mass that I am creating, I am editing it. I am carving out the placement of the shapes just like I would for one of my step by step videos. The shirt was an easy place to start because it is central to this drawing. I followed it with the belt and the pants.

Im developing the shading a little earlier than I would with my step by step videos. The shading actually helps me with future placements. A shadow forms a shape and I use these shadow shapes to help me place highlights and other shadows. When you are developing the left arm be sure to notice the shape that is formed in between.

At this point. It is all about edges. Great artists make their original lines invisible. I have not managed that level of skill yet but I am getting better at it because im aware of the importance of edges.

Do you know what there is a pink bunny visible from outer space? Well I did! Let me show you what I mean. After I read about this pink bunny and started navigating Google Earth, I began to wonder.........What else is visible in the Google Earth Art Gallery? In this video you will find some of the coolest artwork, visible from outer space. Some of these artworks have videos made about them already, and I will put the links in the upper right hand corner of the video player. I have barely scratched the surface of what is out there, so if you know of something cool. Put its Geo tag in the comments so others can find it. The geo tags of everything mentioned in this video are in the video description.

Today, I decided to incorporate oil pastels in to a mixed media work of art. I also used/combiled oil paint illustration markers and Prismacolor Color Pencils to create the portrait that you see. I describe my process as I narrate: First, I did a pencil sketch which I inked. Second I used illustration markers (Prismacolor and Ad Chartpak) to lay down the first layer of color. Then I added a layer of oil pastels atop the layer of illustration marker. The oil pastels are more mixable than the color pencils and are also more opaque. They mix with liquin (like the color pencils and oil paint). I discovered that the process closely resembles painting (especially) when you mix the pastels on a palette, with liquin and then apply with a paintbrush. I finished my (quasi- Bob Ross demonstration) with a few layers of oil paint, since there is no substitute for oil paints mixability and layering capabilities (as well as the range of opacities). I am happy with the portrait that I made of youtube user armanchik24. I learned a lot while incorporating the oil pastels in to my artwork.

Today, you are going to learn how to draw the human skull in front view. Just follow my step my step instructions and I promise you that you will surprise yourself. But I want to try something new. After you complete your drawing, take a video of it and post it as a video response to this video. I will personally critique the first ten video responses to this video.

Step 1: Draw a half circle shape, with two tiny half circles on each end.
Step 2: Draw the holes for the eyes and the nose. Notice that the top of the eye shape starts at the bottom of the half circle shape from step one. Also, notice that the nose shape is triangular and it starts 1/3 of the way up the eye shape.
Step 3: is a tricky step. Add the line that I just added to complete the shape. Notice the perfect symmetry on each side. Notice that the bottom has a squiggly line.
Step 4: Add the upper teeth. There are 12 upper teeth visible and the largest ones appear to be at the front of the mouth. The mouth curves back in a horseshoe shape and the back teeth are blocked. Be sure to make the teeth smaller as they go further back in the mouth. Also be sure to notice that the teeth in the front are somewhat trapezoidal in shape and widest away from the gum.
Step 5: Add the bottom row of teeth. Notice that they are slightly smaller than the top teeth. Also, notice that the top row partially overlaps the bottom. Finally, be sure to see that their widest point is also away from the gum. Here is a close up.
Step 6: Add the jawline. Be sure to notice the shapes that connect the jaw with the rest of the skull.
Step 7: Add the details on the eye sockets and nose.
