Speed Draw / Time lapse artwork of Punk Rock Girl by Merrill Kazanjian. This artwork was created in the tradigital method (A method that combines traditional art materials with computer possibilities). I used acrylic paint, pencil, illustration markers, color pencils, a digital camera, a scanner, a printer and the computer program Paint Shop Pro to create this artwork. It was inspired by the old, Dead Milkmen song, Punk Rock Girl. The steps are highlighted in this video. Please comment and rate if you like it (or even if you dont). I would love some feedback.
Visit my website Merrillk.com to download a free twelve step guide on how to draw a punk rocker. In the search box in the upper left hand corner, type in punk rock and save it on your computer.

- Its been four weeks since my last video....Where have I been?
Lets just say that I have read more figure drawing books in the past month than I did in my entire life....and I have an ambitious plan. I created a series of figure drawing videos that will be as comprehensive as a college course and a heck of a lot less expensive.
Here is the plan- We will start out with five videos on human proportion. I studied the notebooks of Leonardo Davinci as well as other more recent masters to comprise a formula for drawing the human body. Next, I am going to three videos on observation skills and I will pass on advice from masters such as Harold Speed and Kimon Nicolaides. Finally, I will give you a chance to practice what you learned about proportion and observation in an ongoing series of videos where you will be able to practice figure drawing from your computer screen.
And please know that this new series does not mean that I am stopping production on all of the other types of videos on my channel
To help you find what you need, I organized all of my videos in to playlists.
When you visit my channel page, hit the playlists tab at the top and you will see the categories that I grouped my videos in to. These categories will help you find what you are looking for. I have about 80 videos right now, but I am aiming to have around 200 by the end of 2010.
The first video in the figure drawing series should be out later this week. Thank you for subscribing to my channel.
Hey Its Merrill. I "Speak Now" to tell you that this video will teach you how to fill a "Blank Space" with a painted portrait of Taylor Swift. No, no no wait.....Im serious here.....All You Have To Do Is Stay". Your painting wont be a "Picture to Burn" because Im gonna show you "How You Get The Girl" Step By Step.
"Everything Has Changed"? No, "Come Back Be Here" its still step by step, im just using paint this time. This way, due to the explicit instruction, you will paint "Beautiful Eyes" "All Too Well"
Hey Merrill......Where do you get the painting supplies, Dont WOrry I know places.
But lets start out with a pencil and some canvas paper. If you use the eraser too much, please dont forget to shake it off. Lets begin

A painting by noted artist Merrill Kazanjian. Hey remember me. It's Merrill. The guy who does the step-by-step videos on YouTube. And crazy artwork uh... I am going to tell you what I've been up to over the past few months and I'm going to repay an old debt to Terrence from TerrenceAnimation who has waited so patiently for his portrait. You saw just a second ago he had his artwork listed on KnicksNow.com. That was one-half of the prize. The other half of the prize is this mixed media painting. That is what I'm doing in this video. So I said it's a mixed media painting and I am using paint shop pro (a computer graphics program). I like to start with a start out with a photo collage. Terrence seems like an interesting guy. You should see his entry. You could go back and visit his channel to see the winning entry, but I could tell that he is a really interesting person and i think that just a traditional oil painting would really not fit his personality. so I am going to go little bit crazy making art today. I'm going to put some of my old characters in to this work. I'm going to photo collage some of these monks (old drawings). You'll see what i'm getting at a it's a little crazy now but you'll see what I'm getting at. So he had this great look on his face and I had to do something with it and again I didn't feel that an oil painting was it was the right way to go about this. All of those months that you see were basically drawn but not the traditional way. The robes were only drawn once. I scanned that drawing and connected that with illustration marker and paint marker and what I did was: I scanned it and I had each one of them in the same pose but I drew a different head for each monk. And I'd just basically put it over the same bodies and that's one way computers can really make artwork interesting. Computers give you a new level and new depth and more possibilities for creating imagery. I didn't have to spend my time doing the same thing over and over and over again for the bodies. Now, This is my big investment. Its a Hewlett Packard Design Jet Print large format printer that prints onto canvas. I am putting the photo collage that made of Terrance, it is a "bobble head". A few months ago the Monks were part of the background to my channel. And of course I had to include the little old man. He is my trademark. When you have a channel named kazanjianm you have to use something memorable and that's the story behind the little old man. Let me also say uh...this wasn't intended but he kind of looks like my grandfather. So some people ask who is the little old man? I guess that it's my grandpa. So anyway its printing (on the printer) and what you are going to see me do is some painting directly over the print. Keep in mind it is on canvas. Canvas is not paper, it is linen so it is ok to put paint directly on to canvas. You don't get the same exact resolution as paint but you get something that is similar though. There is nothing in my opinion that's more beautiful than a painted surface... if you go to a museum even if you look at the older colors or fugitive colors. Colors can fade over time with exposure to light and certain pigments have faded. It is still more beautiful that a photograph taken over the past twenty years... when you look at the surface when you see the depth... photos are just one layer and painters create many opaque and transparent layers in paintings. I think that's what makes the artwork really, really interesting. So I am using paint to go over it now. without There is a link in the video description for the supplies I used. I am also using paint markers because they are accurate and create straight lines without running out of paint.... Paint brushes are not always the most accurate things. They're great for mixing colors that you can't makes lines as well as you can with paint markers. You cant mix paint as well with paint markers. You can mix them a little bit but the tips get dirty. The only way to clean them is to rub them on a piece of paper. With paint brushes you can't make the solid lines, you always wind up running out of paint uh... paint markers it's the opposite.
There's no perfect art supply uh... but I kind of mix and match uh... and I really like the digital stuff as well. The mixed media approach kind of helps make things interesting...

Hello Im Pablo Van Warhol and Today on art news. An artist turns his cat in to a helicopter, Google brings the freaky Google Maps car in to art museums and PBS's Art21 is On the Rise. We will show you the artwork of Barry Jazz Finnegan, Tim Gagnon, LoboMaloArte, WashedUpTV and XanderComicsInc. YouTube has added and Live Streaming For YouTube channels. We'll show you how to use it. And .........Have you ever read bull? Chances are it comes from the pages of a contemporary art magazine........We'll give you just as much caffeine in Matt Keeney's segment. Lets get started with Art subscriber rankings compiled by OrangeMonkey92.
The Google Art Project is kind of like Google maps street view...........but for art museums. The viewer can virtually walk through several of the most acclaimed museums in the world; including the Tate Gallery, London; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; and the Uffizi, Florence. Users can log in with their Google Account to create their own collection. YouTube has been fully integrated in to the Google art project because several partner museums have now opted to include guided video tour to their galleries. This provides users the option to virtually walk through a museum themselves and listen to an audio guide at certain artworks, or to follow a video tour as an expert guides them through a gallery.
Its a great resource! And its really cool of Google Tube to do this.....But we all wish that they would pay the same attention to contemporary YouTube artists. Thank goodness we have Yoz! Here is her segment.
It appears we have some breaking news. YouTube has pulled the plug on Topic Search, which to date was the best way to find specific genres of visual arts on youtube.
Youtube has given all visual artists a way to directly communicate with their audiences. Its called a live hangout. Executive Producer Merrill Kazanjian will now show you how to do a live hangout on your youtube channel.
YouTube has entered PBS Visual Arts Show Art21 in the on the rise competition for June 2012. The voting has ended and the winner will be announced on the YouTube Creators blog in a few days. YouTubers such as CartoonBlock and ThePortraitArt have been featured in this competition before. The winner gets featured on the YouTube Homepage and exposed to 1 Billion people.
One billion is a big number and for our 2D segment, Thad Taylor will introduce us to an artist who works big, His name is Barry Jazz Finnegan and he is not known by 1 billion people yet, but his legend is quickly growing. Lets take a look.
Ladies and gentlemen it appears we have some breaking news.
An Artist turned his dead cat in to a helicoptor........Lets let tyler explain.
Lets have a moment of silence for Orville. Ok Thats enough! Dont forget. THis show is about you! Report your news to facebook.com/youtubeartnews. We welcome our new Blogger Ms. Cindy Defelice aboard, to YouTube Art News. With our final segment, here is Mr. Matthew Keeney.

How to sketch Justin Bieber Step by Step. Theres something about having great hair......No gray hair.....great hair. The ladies always seem love the guys with the floppy bouncing hair.......Oh your smooth.....And they love them even more if they could sing and dance.......
This video will teach you how to draw a pop star who got his big break on youtube, .....no not little old man....Mr. Justin Bieber....... All you need is paper, a pencil, and some determination. I will lead you step by step through this drawing so that it is as easy as possible. Pause the video at the end of each step and follow along with me and I guarantee that you will surprise yourself. If you need extra help hit the link in the video description to go to a resource with step by step instruction through words and pictures to compliment this video. You have everything that you need to make a successful drawing. Lets get started.
Step 1: Study the two main shapes before you draw. The bottom shape looks like a perfectly symmetrical cup but the bottom is pointed rather than flat. The top shape looks like melting ice cream on top of a ice cream cone. The distances from the chin to the middle of the hairline and from the hairline to the top of Biebers head are about the same.
Step 2: Draw in the shape for Justin Bieber's neck.
Step 3: Add the beads. Notice that they make a V Shape.
Step 4: Add his shirt line. Notice the placement of the lines in comparison to the edges of the paper.
Step 5: Add Bieber's eyes directly below the hairline. His eyes are football shaped and the iris of the eye forms a U shape inside the football shape. You can fit exactly one eye length in between his two eyes. Notice that there is only one eyebrow visible. Here is a close up
Step 6: Add Bieber's Nose. His nose actually fits between the two eye shapes above. This is very rare and I hope that he never catches a cold! Be sure to notice the extra shape on the side.
Step 7: Add the shape for his top lip. The shape is like a flattened letter M and the corners of the mouth shape align with the pupils in the eye shape.
Step 8: Add the bottom lip. It is shaped like a banana.
Step 9: Add the teeth. Take some extra time to observe this step. Notice that I did not put in lines to separate the teeth yet, only points at the bottom and top.
Step 10: Add the highlight shapes in the hair. This step is optional and do not stress if you do not perfectly draw this difficult shape. "how to draw famous people step by step"

What is youtubes place in art history?
Youtube is the early 21st century version of an art musuem. Its the new Louvre. I think that the most significant art of today is being posted on youtube and ill prove that at the end of this video. So, all great art is a reflection of the era in which it was created...I dont think that todays art will be done justice if it is housed in a museum building like the art of the past. There was a time when painting was the greatest visual technology in the world but it became less relevant with the inventions of photography and video. There was a big debate in contemporary art about whether painting was dead and I credit youtube for bringing painting and other forms of art back to life. The difference is performance. In todays art, the performance is more important than the final product and youtube gives artists an arena to perform and document their work to an audience that views a billion videos a day from around the world. Youtube viewers are the art curators of the 21st century. You do this when you favorite a video or rate it.......or subscribe to a channel. This is a much more democratic method than the past. So much of what we see in museums was decided by a relatively small group of individuals. Also, youtube is becoming a major patron for artists, although I think that this is happening by accident. I have seen a lot of artists become youtube partners........and that gives artists a financial alternative to the gallery system.
I want to end by restating my first point. The most significant art of the 21st century is being posted on youtube right now Click on these links to see what I mean.

Phase 1: I began this oil portrait with a pencil sketch on drawing paper. This is very unorthodox (when compared to painting techniques of the past) because oil portraits are usually done on canvas or wood panel and any sketching is done with vine charcoal. Paint becomes more transparent in time and pencils lines will eventually be seen through a painting as it ages. The vine charcoal will blend with oil paint but pencil will not. I have a very creative fix to this problem (as you will see in the coming steps).
Phase 2: The second step of a traditional painting is usually an underpainting with brown paint (usually burnt sienna). Underpaintings give painters an opportunity to build masses with paint (turn thin lines from drawing instruments in to blocks of tone, with the help of a paint brush). Underpaintings also allow artists to build tones. I use gray illustration markers rather than oil paint, because of the speed in which I can apply it (no mixing / superior drying time) I recommend the Warm and Cool Grays Marker Set listed below if you wish to try my technique.Chartpak Ad Marker Set: Warm and Cool Grays- Set of 25 A single nib with three distinct line weights. These waterproof, permanent, solvent-based markers deliver brilliant, sparkling color in fine point, medium weight, or broad strokes, with just a shift of the wrist. From crisply articulated tight comps to broadly expressive illustrations, one marker gives you all the lines you need. Phase 3: To build skin tones, I used flesh tone Chartpak AD Illustration Markers. These markers can create wonderful works of art when used alone, but I used them as a quick means to color my drawing (soon to be painting). Flesh tone Markers Flesh Tone and Gray Markers Pantone Prismacolor Ad Chartpak. Phase 4: Next, I added a layer of Prismacolor Color Pencils. Prismas are translucent and very mixable. The fine point of the color pencil helped me get great details for the features of the face (fine tipped paint brushes ALWAYS RUN OUT OF PAINT!!!!)Phase 5: Scan. Here is where things get interesting! I scanned my drawing to edit on my computer (clean it up). Below is the updated version of the scanner I used. I have gotten a lot of mileage out of it and I love it!HP Designjet 510 24" Printer Fast printing: up to 3.5 min/page color A1/D size on coated media, 55 sec/page line drawings Prints HP-GL/2 and PLT files with click of a button Ideal for in-house printing of high-quality CAD drawings. Phase 7: Now it is time for some painting!!!! I used the oil paint colors Ultramarine Blue, Venetian Red, Titanium White, Flake White, Transparent Earth Orange, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Gold Ochre, Olive Green, Raw Siena, Lamp Black, Asphaltum, Caucasian Flesh Tone, and Alizarin Crimson Permanent. I started with the highlight areas I mixed a lot of Flake White in to the areas on the cheek (with the other colors. The ears and the lips recieved a lot of Cad. Red and Alizarin Crimson mixed with olive green and Tit. White and Lamp Black, Phase 7: (continued) The shadow areas were glazed (click on the image below to go to a video on how to glaze) Glazing is adding multiple layers of transparent paint atop opaque paint (see video).Accents on the Figure Set

What happens when the faces of three dictators are merged? Megazord and the Power Rangers have nothing on "Hugmadenijong ill". Check out this video to see some tradigital artwork by artist Merrill Kazanjian. It is done in time lapse (2 hours in to 2 minutes). I started out with the computer program Paint Shop Pro 8 (a stone age version of Photoshop) to cut and arrange a photomontage. Next, I printed on thick paper. After that, I tied it together with a layer of color pencil. Finally, I put the finishing touches on with oil paint. The method that I use is called Tradigital Art. It combines traditional media (paint, pencil) with digital media (computer applications and digital photography).

To draw the head from any angle you must first understand its basic structure. Look past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This ability to simplify can be applied to the features of the face, but when starting the drawing you could look even further. Ignore even the features and simplify to the most basic form of the head. I use a method taught by Andrew Loomis in his book, "Drawing the Head & Hands".
The head deconstructed into its basic forms, is a sphere as the cranium and a block as the jaw and cheek bones.A Sphere as the Cranium
The sides of the head are flat, so we can slice off a piece from both sides of the ball. From profile, this plane will be a perfect circle, but when drawing it from any other angle, it will appear to be an oval because of perspective. Divide this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the beginning of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the brow line. The top and bottom of the oval help you find the hair line and the bottom of the nose.A Block as the Jaw and Cheek Bones
Attach the shape of the jaw. The top will start at the brow line and the back will start at the center of the oval. This is a 3-D volume with a front plane, side planes, and bottom plane (bottom plane is seen from some angles).

0:27- Notice that I am using a mechanical pencil. It has thinner graphite and it helps me create subtle tones for the features of the face. 0:27 Bruno Mars has dark brown eyes. BUT, do not be tempted to go too dark right away, try to build slowly.0:30 The pupil of the eye is darker in tone than the iris. Notice that I left a small white space for a reflection in each eye. this is key to creating a realistic looking eye
0:35 If you havent done so already, erase the line from the top of the bowl shape that goes across the bottom of the nose.1:00- Notice that the C shaped shadow going from the eyebrow to the bottom of the nose has a WIDE VARIETY in tones. Press harder and use high number B pencils (4B, 6B, 8B) to create darker tones.1:18 Watch how I use the paper stump to start the shadow to your left. I "cross hatch" some lines, and then I spread the lines (graphite) with the stump. If you do not have a paper stump, use a Q-Tip.1:44- A singnificant marker on Bruno's face is the deep fold between the mouth and nose. To truly get his likeness, you will need to get that.2:03 - "Float like a butterfly and shade like a bee"....In other words, move around. Do not get stuck in one place. Develop your drawing evenly.2:24 The background on the right side of his face (your left) will eventually be as dark as the shirt tone that I just added.2:55- The paper below my hand is called a slip sheet. It allows me to rest my hand on the drawing without smudging it.3:18- Do NOT make the same MISTAKE I made. I RUSHED the background instead of hatching it in SLOWLY.3:50- At this point of the drawing and shading process, your goal should be to eliminate "lines" and notice the nuances of "edges". In other words, some shapes have solid edges, while others have softer edges. There is often a tonal difference as well.
3:50- Watch how I use the blending (paper) stump to soften an edge......Suggestion: Look in the mirror (right now) and notice the tonal and physical (hardness softness) differences of your face.4:27- The highlights and shadows on the right side of his face (your left) are very complex but important. Notice the darkness that goes down his cheek and the four highlights. 5:09 Watch me shade the left side of his face (your right side). It is very tricky. the dark values are very hidden.....but they are still there.5:48- The nose is tricky. The darkest part is the nostril. The entire shape of the bottom of the nose stays pretty light because the light source seems to be shining up from his left.
6:28- The darkest part of the mouth is the two corners.
6:52- My biggest mistake was going TOO FAST with shading the backgound. When you press hard it causes a crease/indentation in the page. When the paper gets damaged, your shading will be uneven. Youll see what I mean. 7:29- Rewind to 7:24 to see how I use the pencil and brush to blend two DIFFERENT TONED shadows together. 8:14- At this point of the drawing, I am going to use the high number B pencils to get the dark values in. I am also going to use the kneaded eraser to create highlights. 9:18- If you have any lines left (such as the one on the hat) get them out of your drawing. Look around at the world. It is expressed in shapes or masses, not lines. The most difficult part of pencil drawing ls realizing that you are working with a fine tip, capable of making only lines.

An instructional video by tradigital artist Merrill Kazanjian
Step 1- Scan the image
Step 2- Open the scanned image in Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop and cut out your favorite part. In this instance I chose the head of the closest character. I liked the face that I drew but I decided to change the hairstyle. I always liked NBA all star Ben Wallace's hair so I will use the digital scissor to cut it out.
Step 3- Print
Step 4- I use illustration markers and color pencils to give my old drawing a new look. For this image, I have combined traditional and digital media over an old pencil sketch. The sketchbook that it was in was taking up space in my studio and I hadn't looked at it for years. I wasnt in the mood to start a new drawing today so I decided to experiment and give new life to an old drawing.
Jackson Pollock said over 50 years ago- New needs need new techniques. And the modern artists have found new ways and new means of making their statements... the modern painter cannot express this age, the airplane, the atom bomb, the radio, in the old forms of the Renaissance or of any other past culture. I feel that more artists should try tradigital art. (That is, art that uses both traditional and digital media). I have witnessed many artists who are threatened by technology but the truth is that computers have created more possibilities for artists.
Step 5- Finish the figure digitally
