How to Draw a Female Face in Profile
Circle Line Art School: Episode 236

Step 1:
Draw a circle, just a quick sketch, you can alter it later. I use a 4B pencil.

Step 2:
Draw a curve for the jaw.

Step 3:
Draw a horizontal line in the centre of the circle, for the eye.

Step 4:
Draw a line for the base of the nose.

Step 5:
Draw a line for the middle of the mouth.

Step 6:
We can now draw a profile: I start with a slight curve inwards for the eye, then just draw a simple nose and draw lips and a chin, neck and jaw line. These are all guidelines and can be moved or changed later.

Step 7:
Draw an ear, start at the eye line and the curve goes down to the base of the nose, also half way back from the female profile.

Step 8:
Add detail to the eyes. Darken the top eye line and add two iris circles.

Add pupils and darken, softly tone the iris.

Add upper eye lids and look at both eyelids together.

Step 9:
Draw the eye in profile. A small curve with two simple lines to make a triangle shape.

Step 10:
Draw a simple curve for an eyebrow.

Step 11:
Draw the nose, add a line for the nostril.

Step 12:
Add some detail to your drawing of the ear.

Step 13:
Continue with drawing the main strands of hair.

Make sure the hairstyle is bigger than the head!

Step 14:
Erase the guidelines and soften lines that are too strong.

Step 15:
Start to add detail and tone to the hair, following its natural direction.

Shade with a flat even tone, dark areas first.

Step 16:
Add tone above the eye and below the eyebrow.

Add tone on one side of the face, try to keep the tones soft.

Step 17:
Add tone to the hair.

Step 18:
Correct anything that you think does not work, it is good to be able to see what does not work, but only erase small parts at a time and then redraw!

Step 19:
You have now hopefully completed a beautiful portrait!

There are many ways to draw. In this art video I show some of the tricks I have discovered over the years that I use in my own art and my art teaching.
